Converted to what?
When you are Baptized - you are indelibly marked for all time as a Christian. If you "become" something else, you are still a Christian (because it's something God has done, and not by anything we can do on our own - Ephesians 2:8-9) - but perhaps a very bad Christian.
Will you still go to heaven? I'd have to say "yes, eventually". This is the reason why, although I am not Roman Catholic, I fully believe in the doctrine of Purgatory.

first you have to know what the true natures of hell and heaven are.
Hell in its most fundemental nature is the Absense of God. Gods love is the greatest thing anyone could have and hell is the absense of everything that God has to offer. Of course thats not so bad if you don't know what it is to have him in the first place but when you die you always feel God for a moment. Now, the question you ask is will God take your salvation away? The answer is no but if you turn your back to God and leave his Grace on your own accord then you will not have "salvation" If you love God and recognize him as the one true Creator and Savior then you have nothing to fear... If you denounce God and deny his goodness it's off to Hell with you... (No need to bring Ice) but hope you don't mind feeling lonely

When you receive the lord god, You are at your purest, the most innocence, the most forgiven, because your past is forgotten and forgiven, your a brand new person, the hard part is to stay with the lord and do the right thing, If you fall....ask god to forgive you, This would be like saying your sorry with all your heart, Christians are not perfect only Jesus is prefect, Remember in your walk with him, ask yourself what would Jesus do, and all ways invite him in every thing you do, say: you want to go to a party, is it a party that you can invite Jesus to? If not: then maybe you shouldn't go, Remember Jesus whats you to have fun, but he also whats to be with you.

I'm a little unclear whether or not you're denouncing all religion or converting to another with your wording but I'll give an opinion on the matter from a former Christian turned atheist standpoint.
Being an atheist does not stop me from having an opinion on what God may or may not do in certain situations. I am undecided about larger major things such as murder and rape but I can tell you what I think about the situation you're in as I am in it also.
I believe that if there was a God and a heaven he would not base who he admits into heaven based on a book written by a bunch of mortal humans. If you, like I, have came to the conclusion that you do not believe in God based on lack of evidence that is nothing that YOU can help. Attempting to believe and believing are two different things.
"Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of a blindfolded fear."
-Thomas Jefferson.
Learning about how nature works and how things came to be opens your mind to how truly wondrous the universe is. I truly believe if a God created all of this and is going to give us a life after this one he is not going to base admittance on whether you happened to be raised to believe him or not.
"To talk of immaterial existences is to talk of nothings. To say that the human soul, angels, god, are immaterial, is to say they are nothings, or that there is no god, no angels, no soul. I cannot reason otherwise... without plunging into the fathomless abyss of dreams and phantasms. I am satisfied, and sufficiently occupied with the things which are, without tormenting or troubling myself about those which may indeed be, but of which I have no evidence."
-Thomas Jefferson
I hope I have eased your mind a little. I always thought when I was a Christian that if God was so powerful we should give him a little credit and not try and tack on human imperfections such as prejudice (against believers/non-believers). If God were truly perfect he would not judge someone for such reasons.
Best Regards,
Zach
P.S.: Well thank you for clarifying that. I hope your friend's mind may be eased by what I've said.

No, God does not take your salvation away but you may renounce Him. If you reject His teachings and principles why would you want to go to Heaven?
Because He does not take it away, it is left intact, because hopefully one day you will realize that what you had for the 25 years was worthwhile, the truth and the "real" thing.

Christians do not convert!
Repentance means to turn and go in the opposite direction.
If you're not on the path of redemption, then your not saved! And never were.
Some people think that they are Christians when in fact Jesus will say that He never knew them.

Salvation is a free gift to us from God paid by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Since the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable (Rom 11;29) your salvation, if you are truly born-again, is irrevocable. It cannot be taken away from you forever whatever you do.

The time you said you believed doesn't matter.. If you became a child of God you can't become a non-child. You can have head knowledge for a very long time without letting God into your heart mind and soul... Jim

you can still go to hell. no offense. but if you don't repent your sins or turn your back on God that is a path to hell. so no the salvation can't be taken away but if you don't choose to use that salvation then it can't work for you. the Bible also says you must praise God and give him thanks and repent for your sins and accept him and accept Jesus Christ as your savior. if you convert then you are no longer accepting Him as your savior. you can turn away your salvation. God isn't taking your salvation away you are giving it away.
