Whose card are you using. No big impression from using plastic if it is Mom or Dad's card.
If you are worried about the impression made by method of payment ... your head probably isnt in the right place ... be more concerned with an affordable and memorable experience.

I understand exactly how you feel. It could easily be interpreted that, by paying with cash, you are showing off, but by using your card, you could be giving the impression that you can't really afford the meal and are merely charging it (which would be handling your finances less than perfectly).
I would suggest paying with a debit card with a credit card logo. If you have one. Your date may not even notice (she's likely to notice if you pull out a huge pile of cash, though), but you're saving yourself from either negative image.
Etiquette may dictate that you pay with cash, but honestly, who listens to that anymore? Your date won't be sitting there taking notes on how you hold your fork, and odds are, she doesn't know what the proper etiquette is either. Don't stress--just try to enjoy yourself. Do whatever you feel like you should do.
If you want (and can afford it), you could always keep your options open. Get the cash, and bring the card, and use whichever feels appropriate at the time.
As for me, though--I was always more impressed when my hubby whipped out the card. =) Kinda lame, but there it is....

Do what you normally do. If you normally pay things in cash, use cash. I think it looks good these days to pay in cash, since most people are running up credit card debt. It certainly doesn't look bad either way.
The most important thing to do on a date is to not spend TOO much time looking over the bill and for gosh sakes, leave the coins in your pocket. If it's an upscale restaurant and you're paying in cash, try to avoid using $1 bills - just looks a little too nitpicky and stingy.

The best thing to do is when the check comes, take the check and politely excuse yourself to the restroom. Then pay the check at the checkout. That way your not being flashy or anything.

Can you use a debit card? This way it comes out of your checking account and you are basically paying cash without having to flash it around.
Good luck on your date!

card. one should always be wary of people who use cash regularly. It may mean they do not have a bank account or they have poor credit. A visa check card is the same as a credit card with the maximum credit line being what you balance is in your checking account. I rarely use cash but do not use credit cards.
