I deployed to Iraq in 2005. I was fortuante to have an M4A3 while over there. The guys who were carrying M16s had the M16A4 which had a detachable carry handle. However, I saw alot of units over there that were still carrying around the old M16A2s. Some were even previously A1s that had been refurbished and restamped A2. A few of the Squad Designated Marksmen were issued either M1As that had been accurized or the bolt action M40 (or whatever the military designation is for a Remington 700 Sniper Rifle). I heard they had a few of the Barret M82A3s in country, but never ran across them. If you step up to something "heavier" for the average soldier, some soldiers are issued the M249 SAW which fires the same round as the M4/M16, but lays down alot more lead due to a higher cyclic rate. Also, we carried a 12 guage Mossberg.

Depends on their nationality.
All countries have their own standards for arming troops. Whereas the Americans use the M-16 family of weapons as their service rifle, the Brits use the SA80, the Germans the G36 family, and so forth.
So, unless you are more specific as to the nationality of the troops, you're not going to get a 100% accurate answer.

The long weapon is the M-16 the shorter M-16 is the M-4 and is used in urban warfare and the scope allows for very accurate long range fire. Some of the long M-16's have a M-203 40mm grenade launcher under the barrel.

When I was there a couple of years ago I saw US troops armed with the M16A2, M4, M9 9mm pistols and 12 gauge pump shotguns. Almost ever Iraqi I saw was armed with an AK47 variant. The most common was the M16A2.

The standard battle rifle is still the M-16A2 for the U.S. Armed Forces. Standard pistol is the M-9 [Beretta 92-F 9mm semi auto pistol.] Standard shotgun is the 12 gauge Mossberg 500 A-1.

Sucks to be the guys carrying M16's still. I have never even seen an M16 in my hand since basic training. COME to a real unit and get an M4 Carbine.
