Im = in dem

It's dative, and usually doesn't imply a physical movement from point A to point B.

Sie tanzen im Tanzsaal -- They're dancing in the ballroom.

They're all right, but forgot to mention that In/an only becomes im/a, with the dative singular definit article of either the masculine or the neutral gender.
der Tisch: Ich sitze am ("an dem") Tisch.
der Keller: Ich bin im ("in dem") Keller.

das Fenster: Ich sitze am ("an dem") Fenster.
das Haus: Ich bin im ("in dem") Haus.

Does not apply with feminine nouns:

die Wand: Ich stehe an der Wand.
die Küche: Ich bin in der Küche.

im is in + dem Ich sitze im Haus.
am is an + dem Wir sitzen am Tisch.

both in and an are two-way prepositions. They use accusative (ich gehe ins (in das) Haus) when motion to is implied and dative with location (Basketball sollst du nicht im Haus spielen.)

Hi,
The word im is used instead of "in dem"(Dativ) which means "in the", as in "Im Haus" (in the house).
An is NOT like im, it can mean "ON" (power on) or "at", "on", e.g. "Ich bin an der ...Schule" (I'm at ... school)
