To me this makes no sense. I want to lose weight by drinking Protein shakes, but it also cause people who want to build muscle do so? I don't want to get big like bodybuilders. Is there a trick to making the Protein Shakes go in the direction you want them to?

I think it's probably a case of "and or" as in shakes can help you lose weight and or gain muscle. You can get shakes to either 'replace' meals, or make it less likely one would eat by satisfying any hunger urges with the protein (as per the previous answer, seek a trained medical opinion before going ahead be wary of online information on this as it generally tries to push one product or range of products that may not be best suited.)

Protein goes towards repairing and building muscle in the body, particuarly after strain is placed on them - so unless you're actively body building/weight training I wouldn't worry about starting to look like a body-builder. If you're not weight training, but just performing standard weight loss exercise (light cardio work) then protein shakes would work as a meal replacement or assist with making a healthy eating plan (but again, urging to seek medical opinion before buying - not only for health sakes but protein shakes can be dang expensive.)

I don't think protein shakes like SlimFast actually make you gain muscle; the protein and fiber in the shakes keep you feeling full, so you don't want to eat. i think you'd hafta work out more with weights AND drink the shakes to get huge rippling biceps.

yeah, it's sad that most doctors aren't educated enough on the topic. i hope to change that...

anyways, you ask a question. here's my explantion. the protein shake by itself will not accomplish either one of those goals. weight loss is only accomplished through a decreased caloric intake (usually a combination of healthy eating AND exercise). so if you want to use a protein shake to replace an otherwise unhealthy meal (like fast food), then it'll aid you in reducing your daily calorie intake. on the flip side, if you're looking to gain mass, you need extra calories. in that scenario, the shake will give you extra calories needed for growth. in order to get muscular growth you'll need to lift weights, and i mean real weights: core lifts with free weights like squat, deadlift, bench press, rows, pull ups, etc. with increased muscle mass, you'll burn more calories by just sitting around. it'll change your metabolism rate to make you a more efficient calorie burner. this is why athletes and body builders have to consume LOADS of calories each day, just to maintain their frame or supply their high energy demand. so don't worry about "getting bulky." it's not an easy task. you'll almost have to force yourself to eat more frequently than you want in order to gain that kind of size. for a healthy fit body, just eat about 5-6 small meals a day, focusing on healthy staples like:

chicken, egg whites, fat free dairy, and whey protein (protein)
fruits, veggies, whole grains, and beans (carbs and fiber)
olive oil, nuts, natural peanut butter, and fish (fats)

in addition, do a simple full body lifting routing about 3 times a week. something like this: squat, bench press, deadlift, pull-ups. rest a day after each workout. on a rest day, feel free to do some cardio to keep your heart in good condition. just don't believe the myth that cardio/areobics is the best way to burn fat. you exercise for 30 mins out of the day. that's 1/48 or about 2% of your time. you're better off controlling what you eat and building lean muscle mass.
