Absent a nuclear exchange then how and where would they engage? India does not have the lift capacity to move significant forces out of the sub-continent without the permission of the US Navy. Even the large US army would be inadequate to conquer India in the face of the Indian army - bearing in mind the constraints of lift capacity again. The US is probably incapable of waging any kind of irregular or asymmetric warfare against India, although India might be able to become a nuisance to the US by unconventional methods. Where they could engage is in the relatively bloodless arena of cyberwarfare - both countries could try to deny the other the use of the Internet, which could do severe economic damage now. Given India's increasingly active software industry the US might find that country a handful in cyberspace. But I do not see that as a serious possibility. Cyberwar might be more of an issue with China - another country that would find it hard to transport serious forces out-of-area. ( I do know that China has deployed its largest out-of-area force for fourteen hundred years in Sudan, where it provides a cover for that countries assault on Darfur. But India v US - unlikely.

It less about who "won" than who "didn't lose". I mean the Indian military doesn't have the capability to take the 1st square foot of US soil so there is no way the Indians could win. They might could not lose because it would be near impossible to take India and not be stuck in a similar situation to Iraq, only the US daily casualties would be much much worse. If nukes are involved then the whole world loses.

However, the question is moot. The two countries are much more allied than they are opposites. As India emerges as an economic power it is to both countries advantage to be friends.

The Indian population is growing a lot faster then the Chinese which IS A LOT and the Indian Army is quite well trained,if the Americans couldn't beat the Vietnamese then they don't stand a chance against the Indians. The Indians still use the best rifle in the world...The British Lee Enfield and it's even better then the quite modern US M-16 which is classed as one of the best rifle's in the world.

I don't think that will happen anytime in the near future but I think the U.S. would win simply because of its military prowess and strength if it full dedicated itself to a typical country-versus-country, all-out, no holds barred war.

That is not to say both sides will have a tremendous amount of casualties since both countries have nuclear capabilities, and you shouldn't underestimate the resourcefulness of the Indians as they have many among the world's smartest people.

My opinion.

What on earth makes you think that they would go to war?

I think that it will be the US that will win due to the fact that they apply certain technologies that make them invulnerable, such as stealth technology in aircraft.

But, its hard to say. India has the world's fourth largest military.

I am working with the Indian navy right now. They just bought the USS TRENTON LPD-14, and HANDS DOWN, the Indian military would be begging to the U.S. to leave them alone and go home with their tails between their legs.

it depends how far it would go, they are both nuclear powers and if they used these weapons no one would win.
