I was probably early in that realization. As I was growing up I was so desprate to be treated as an adult that it caused me frustration. I was much more responsible and mature than my peers. It was probably about the time I left for college. I was 18 but I was finally allowed to be totally responsible for myself. I was still not financially independent but I was in school.

16, I could drive, I could work and pay my bills. I knew I was solely responsible for my future.
I drove over to the college, enrolled, worked nights to pay for it, found a cheap room near the college and worked hard for the next 13 years. Now I'm a dermatologist with a very comfortable life.
