With the exception of a couple of answers, I cannot believe the inconsiderate, dumb-a s s e d things people have suggested.
Depression runs rampant in my family (including with myself) so what I am going to tell you is not to be taken as "medical advice" but rather things that sometime work for me.
First of all, I would suggest thinking about your geographic location. Is there a serious lack of sunlight in the winter months? If so, try to get your hands on a lamp that produces natural or "sunlight" effects. Sit underneath it for about 15-20 minutes/day. This actually has a chemical effect on your body and naturally helps to fight off depression.
Secondly, get into VIGOROUS exercise like a martial art. Exercise kicks endorphins into effect and you will feel a sort of "natural" high. Exercise is addictive and this is the reason...you can actually get high from doing it. Not only that, this high won't harm you and after a while, it's effects become more or less permanent (as long as you stick with the exercise). I recomend martial arts because (1) it works for me and (2) there is a social aspect to it which eliminates the feeling of isloation.
Make sure to get plenty of Omega-3's in your diet. Increase your fish intake and decrease heavy meats like beef. Fish DOES help.
Most importantly though, if you feel like a doctor's assistance is needed, DO NOT HESITATE! Go now! Psychotropic drugs are not to be taken lightely but when needed they can help a great deal.
Good luck and I hope this helps at least a little. Depression is very common and whether it's your or someone you love suffering with it, just know that it's not an isolated case. Sometimes it helps to know that you are not alone.
Sorry about any ugly typo's....spell check isn't working again!

Are you aware that Depression is mentioned in the Bible by different people. David who wrote the psalms was depressed. Perhaps you should look into the origins in history before you take dangerous meds approved by the FDA. The FDA approves drugs that are deadly if they know they will still pocket millions if they are sued for killing a hundred.
The older the drug, the more knowledge doctors and scientist have about it, the safer it is, If the depressed person insistently has to have it.
Fact is that the SUNSHINE is the best cure for depression. You want that person outside as much as possible during the day. It evens out the levels of serotonin.(SP?)
The person needs people around them. Gather round them anyway, and even explain why you are. Also, time will change the feelings of the loss of will to continue with life. Tell that person not to act on feelings, the emotional realm changes and flucutates. It will get better.
If meds are wanted, seek the oldest most well known meds that have been used by many.

There are many medications out there and the decision would have to come from your doctor.....as there are different types of depression too.
I can tell you that there are other ways to deal with depression: diet, exercise or if you want a herbal remedy in Europe the prescribe St.Johns wart more than any other anti depressant.....no Rx needed here! It really does depend on how mild or severe your depression is.
Please see a doctor as they are truely the only ones that help. What I will tell you is that if you choose to go on an antidepressant then you must stay one it for one year (no stopping because you think you feel better) after that your doctor should assess and try to wean you off your medications. This significantly reduces your chance of replapse!
Good Luck

well I am a psychiatrist and I'd request u to disregard the 'advice' about alcohol and marijuana. You should see a doctor - your family physician can help. Your doctor will be able to prescribe the right medications. Antidepressants are good drugs. Having your family and friends around definitely helps. Try to discuss your problems with a confidante. Avoid taking any major decisions rite now. If u are not performing well in school / college / work, thats OK. discuss it with your teacher / professor / boss, they will understand

I'm a nurse. I would see a doctor to determine what would work best for your situation. There are so many good ones on the market today, it's hard to choose what will work best for you. Take care and hang in there, things will be OK. Watch this and feel better. www.mayyoubeblessedmovie.com Also I write down my feelings (a journal) and I found that it really works for me.

Make fun, have sex, go out, travel, have pet cats or dogs, invite some MySpace friends over, if not overweight: eat chocolate and other foods which are good for mental health. If you have no partner: subscribe with dating-services. Off-line dating services are, i think, better then online dating services. But you can always try http://www.match.com

See a psychiatrist. There are many anti-depressants available. Treating depression with meds is their area of expertise. It worked for me.
