If a dog misses a period (and is not pregnant), and is swollen during that time, will it make up for the period by discharging old or brown blood later on?

DOGS DO NOT HAVE PERIODS LIKE HUMANS.................
It is called heat cycle or ESTRUS...............
If the dog is swollen it is in heat.......... It could be the beginning of the heat and no blood appears............
Just because there is no blood visible does not mean it skipped its heat.................

Dogs do not have periods. They have heat cycles. The heat cycles last 3 weeks and occur twice a year. During the heat cycle they do not bleed the entire time. The average length of time they bleed is 10 days, however some dogs bleed less some more. Some dogs are real messy during heat others it's hard to tell they bleed at all.
There are 3 parts to a heat cycle..Proestrus,estrus and metestrus. Proestrus is the beginning of the cycle when the eggs mature, the female usually won't accept a male during this part of the cycle, estrus is the part of the cycle where the female is receptive to mating. It is during this time that the bleeding usually starts to pale. and then comes metestrus.this is the part of the cycle taht prepares the uterus for pregnancy if mated and is also the part of the cycle where a false pregnancy can occur if not mated.

Apparently you know nothing about dams (female dogs) the don't have periods, they have heat cycles and no they DO NOT make up for it in the way that you describe (I used to have a dam). I suggest that you get yourself and your dog to the vet and have the vet check your dog out and educate YOU and if you are too embarrassed to let the vet know how little you know about dams then buy a book about breeding and educate yourself because the book will answer all of your questions about them going into heat and everything, then if you are still confused call your vet and ask questions! Short of that stop getting dams and stick to male dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!

then again its abundantly clear that you don't know much about human females either.
