I have a 18 year old cat whose back legs collapse (this has happened 4 times now but they start to work normally within 30 mins), but last night from 11pm to 4am her back legs collapsed, then her front paws and head twitched very badly. At times there was no response from her, her eyes were open but there was no reaction at all. Taking her to the vet is extremely difficult as she turns into a wild animal the minute they try to get near her.
After reading all of your replies I have just phoned and spoken to my vet, he says that they are seizures and as long as she comes out of them (which she does), it is not a reason to have her put down as apart from them she is healthy.

Did the Vet give you an RX for her seizures? I am happy that you can keep your Sweet little cat around longer. All of my cats have lived long lives. I know that you have been taking very good care of her. God bless you and your sweet little Angel too. I know that seizures can be quite scary to look at.But the Vet knows what he is talking about. Did the Vet want to check to see what the cause of the seizures was?I have a friend who has a 17 year old cat with the same problems and her Vet wrote a prescription for her cat Tiger. He didn't like to take the anti-seizure medication at first and now he hasn't had any seizures for a while. Give that sweet baby a hug and a rub under the chin for me.

I have had two dogs that have had some sort of funny turn, their legs went the head went from side to side, and the eyes flickered from side to side. When they came out of it they were fine. the vet could not tell me what it was. and they lived to be a good age. Your cat does not have the same problem as my dogs.
What I am trying to say is you are doing the right thing you have spoke to the vet you have an idea what is happening to her. only you will know when the time is right lo let her go. 18 is old but I know cats can live a long time, as long as she is not suffering and has good quality of life and it dose not happen to often then keep going.

One of my cats had seizures and still lived to 19 years. However, she then displayed symptons similar to your cats, ie, back legs collapsing, and I'm afraid I had to have her put to sleep because the vet said she had neurological problems. I don't know if this was associated with the seizures or not. I hope your cat recovers. Good luck.

Hi,
This is very similar to what happened to my friends cat, although they were quite a bit younger. After some blood tests Sparky was diagnosed as having a virus, something to do with his brain. I am so sorry i cannot remember the exact name of the condition but a course of antibiotics resolved the problem. It can be fatal if not treated quickly i think. Falling over and collapsing, Sparky actually growled at himself as it he didn't know what was going on.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

My friend I hat to tell you this but as you say your cat is 18 years old and she is an old cat but to let him/her suffer like that is wrong he/she is a very sick cat and I can understand that you don't want to put him/her down but the cat won't suffer anymore. I had to do the same thing almost a year ago yes it's still hurt but no cat can not replace you old one. But remember he/she has lots of love but if you want to keep seeing her suffer than there is no help for you all I can say is that the cat is suffering and it's all up to you. Good luck

To help keep her calm when going to the vet you should use Feliway...just spray it in the carrier prior to putting her in it and she will be fine.
If she freaks when going into the carrier then get her used to it by putting her food in it and treats so she will get used to it and not fear it. She will soon feel comfortable and safe in it.
You need to get her over the fear of the vet so that you can take her when needed without the added stress that could only make her worse.

i would go back to the vet and ask him again. only a vet would be able to know what is wrong with your cat. she is getting on a bit now so it might be reaction to old age. dont give her any medication unless has been prescribed from vet.
