yes. If you like oatmeal, maltomeal, cream of wheat and that sort of thing you will probably like mush. You can buy it in the dairy or fresh veggie section of most stores already prepared. It comes in a tube, the same as sausage comes in. Mush is plain yellow cornmeal prepared. Some stores also carry polenta in the same section and it is yellow cornmeal prepared with tomatoes or italian seasonings. I have never tried polenta but mush- If you buy the already prepared kind you can heat it up 2 different ways. My husband likes it sliced thin and fried (like a hamburger in a skillet sprayed with Pam)and then eaten with butter and maple syrup. I like to heat it in the microwave with a little milk. I mash it with a fork so that it is similar in consistency to oatmeal and I also prefer butter and maple syrup on it.

Some of the other answers mention grits and if I'm right they are usually made with white cornmeal instead of yellow. They are served with butter and salt and pepper and are a good side dish like potatoes or rice for dinner (so is polenta) whereas mush is more of a breakfast food.

If you are on a tight budget, you can buy just cornmeal near the flour and sugar in the store. It costs mere pennies per serving and most packages have basic recipes right on the box for things like mush, grits, cornbread, etc. The basic recipe for mush and grits is the same -it's what you put on top of it that makes it different. However, if you have never eaten mush it would be a good idea to buy the prepared stuff first to try -because there is a lot of cornmeal in even the small containers in the flour section and it will go rancid if not used within a few months. Enjoy!

Oh yes! It's excellent! Especially with more butter and a lot of pepper or maybe some hot sauce.
