To watch HDTV you need a TV that can display HD images and a source of HD programming which should be connected together using HDMI, DVI or component (NOT composite) cables.
In the UK, TVs labelled with the "HD Ready" logo are capable of displaying HD images if supplied with a suitable source/signal. Most new models of large screen (26" or bigger) LCD or Plasma screens are "HD Ready". There are also one or two traditional TVs (ie CRT, cathode ray tube) that are "HD Ready". All these screens are widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio in order to meet one of the "HD Ready" criteria.
Most "HD Ready" TVs sold in the UK also have a built-in Freeview tuner enabling the reception of DVB-T signals - with typically around 30 TV channels and 20 radio stations. Please note that these Freeview channels, even on an "HD Ready", are not broadcast in HD. There is a small test in the London area broadcasting HD channels over DVB-T - but I don't believe the Freeview tuners built into any current 'HD Ready' TV is able to decode/display these channels.
So, in order to view and HD image on an 'HD Ready' TV you need an HD source. These include:
Sky HD (extra subscription may be required)
Telewest TVDrive (extra subscription may be required)
XBox 360
Sony PS3
BluRay disc in a BluRay player
HD-DVD in an HD-DVD player
These should be connected to the HDMI, DVI or component input on your 'HD Ready' TV. Note that some non-HD equipment (eg some DVD players) also offer HDMI or component output: for optimum image quality these should be used if your display has matching inputs, but this will not give a true HD image, as the resolution won't be HD (ie 720p or 1080i)

Yes, you will need a new tv but the source that you are watching needs to be broadcast as HD as well- watching a regular broadcast on an HDTV isn't going to look any better than a regular TV.
I don't know if Freeview has and HD channels or not.

You can receive the signal, but if you don't have an HDTV it won't be HD. If you want HDTV you need to buy a TV with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080. Or, if you just want a TV that's compatible with HD, an HD-Ready TV with a screen resolution of at least 1280 x 720.

You need a HDTV, in addition to this you also need something that supplies HDTV output. Freeview doesn't offer this think they are looking in to it in future once analogue is turned off.
Sky offer HDTV but it costs an extra £10 per month.
You can also get blue ray or HDDVD players or an xbox360 or PS3 (if lucky enough to be able to find one) they privide HD signal. PS3 has blue ray player built in and xbox has optional HDDVD drive

HDTV is a new kind of TV. It has a much higher resolution than ordinary TV, so you'd have to buy a new TV.
