Do you think that the psychiatric community ie psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health centers along with the drug companies are "creating" new mental problems in order to sell more psych drugs ie "PAXIL for SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER" along with their television commercials about these psych meds?

Not that I think that they are making up disorders the problem is the medical modle treats illness with a pill or surgery......since mental health is not usually a candidate for surgery a pill it is. They should not allow commercials for medications. Your doctor should be up to date on medicaiton and know what is best for you based on your symptoms. These television ads have created a whole community of people who never would have gone to the doctor but now that they know that a few of their symptoms are also symptoms of thigns to be worries about (as they saw this on tv) they are actually requesting specific medicaitons.......an end should be put to it. That is scarey, this allows people to self diagnose and depending on their physician they may be allowing them to pick their own treatment too.

If someone is experiencing a condtion and seeks treatment for it, then how is it that the psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health centers are 'creating' the problem itself? The person is the one who sought help because they were not able to deal with something in their life. It wasn't the doctor going out onto the street and pointing at the person and saying "you have ____ and need Paxil for it, come to my office immediately for treatment"

I think drug companies want to sell their medications just like breeders want to sell their puppies. However, I don't think they 'create' the symptoms that people suffer with.

The reason why I say this is because I have depression, anxiety and am also bi-polar. I can trace the depression back through my family on my mother's side and the bi-polar back to my father's side. I also have PTSD because of an abusive childhood and marriage. The doctors had not idea what I was dealing with UNTIL I went to them and we sorted out all of my emotions and issues.

So, I don't really agree that psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health centers are 'creating' them. Just maybe, "labeling" them.

no i do not . the mental health centers, and doctors are too busy treating the mentally ill to worry about trying to create new mental problems they have lots of business, they dont need any more. however i think the drug companies are pushing too hard for people to go on drugs . drugs can be the only help for a lot of people, but drugs should be the last resort, as no drugs cure, they only treat the symptoms of mental illness. no one should be on drugs unless they are properly diagnosed, by a competent psychiatrist, not a GP. yes the drug companies are pushing too hard. some mental health issues can be treated by psychologists, and conjunctive therapy without drugs.

You bring up an interesting point, however, there are valid problems like disorders that require some help. I am no fan of taking a pill for every thing that plagues a person, in fact, I believe a lot can be done by simply talking to a counselor.

The big drug companies are making billions on people willing to pop a pill for everything that ails them. Doctors can be drug company whores, and many I believe have stock in the companies and get perks for hocking their wares to patients.

Overall, we as consumers must be smart, very smart and not just take what is handed to us without question.

I do believe that they LABEL emotional problems or problems related to stress , absolutely ! If you read the dmsv (dsmv ) books and research mental illnesses, several of them overlap each other with symptoms, and they try to name each one if the persons symptoms dont match. I believe the drugs they use are very dangerous to the public, and with teens around, who needs drugs in the house ? If you research mental health drugs you will find that very healthy normal people that took those drugs, became murderous in their behaviors, and some killed themselves.
They test them on live subjects, usually healthy college kids that need money.I worked in an old laboratory in Michigan , and we had to build a fence to keep some people in that kept sneaking to the bar.I have read more horror stories about those drugs, more than any other .It has been awhile since I last read them at Kalamazoo library, so you will have to find the info on your own. You can easily research it on the internet also.

mslamom.......you are one that truly understands the field of mental health and I congratulate you on your being able to wade thru all of this and see the facts.
Yes, people go there to get help, then when its not what they want to hear they want to blame the doctors of any kind. There are ads on TV for every kind of meds out there.....erection meds, sleep meds, you name it....so why pick just one? figure that one
I too have a genetic history of mental health issues that medications have been given and enabled those bothered to live perfectly normal lives then....
Doctors (I work in a family med clinic) of all kinds are busy enough without going on the streets looking up patients...so get real.....we work till sometimes 6:30 and 7 seeing everyone in a day....I just thank God now they are aware there is a true illness call mental chemical imbalances that are treatable rather than hiding them in a closet like in the olden days

Err, no.

The problems do exist, even without the drug companies.

The question is: How do you define a mental problem, its treatment, and the efficacy of drugs?

They used to drill holes in a person's head to let the evil spirits out.

This was good. Accepted.
As was the idea of using leeches to clean the blood.

Go figure.

After I got into an argument with my mother.... she started screaming like crazy.... called the cops and they came and beat the **** out of me.... they trashed my apartment and stole a bunch of camping equipment. They took me to a mental hospital where they locked me up in a little room for fifty five days. They doctors would scream at me. They told me I have schizophrenia. TOTAL BULLSH!T !!!! They are forcing injections on me which made me gain eighty pounds and it's destroying my brain.

Another time when something very similar happened (my parents are sick in the head).... a girl jumped into my bed at the hospital so they told me I had borderline personality disorder.

It's ALL a bunch of BULLSH!T !

Pschiatrists should be burned alive.

Oh, definitely - its all a big conspiracy . . .their is a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia you know. . . And just because you haven't heard of a disorder, doesn't mean it hasn't existed on the books for a long time.
