We are looking at installing carpet squares in the basement for the DIY effect. Is that a good idea on concrete?

Actually, that is a really good solution since concrete floors are sometimes uneven and regular carpeting doesn't always lay smoothly. And it's good to be able to replace just a few squares in case you get water damage or a stain.

Ask the person in the section that your buying the squares in. You can get an underlayment for that. They even have "floating floor foundations" you can put down on your basement.
