As it turns out, most of that "energy" comes from two main ingredients: sugar and caffeine. A typical energy drink can contain up to 80 milligrams of caffeine (about the same amount as a cup of coffee). By comparison, an average 12-ounce soda contains 18 to 48 mg of caffeine.
Although the manufacturers claim that energy drinks can improve your endurance and performance, many health experts disagree. Any boost you get from drinking them, they say, is solely from the sugar and caffeine.
Caffeine works by blocking the effects of adenosine, a brain chemical involved in sleep. When caffeine blocks adenosine, it causes neurons in the brain to fire. Thinking the body is in an emergency, the pituitary gland initiates the body's "fight or flight" response by releasing adrenaline. This hormone makes the heart beat faster and the eyes dilate. It also causes the liver to release extra sugar into the bloodstream for energy. Caffeine affects the levels of dopamine, a chemical in the brain's pleasure center.
All of these physical responses make you feel as though you have more energy.

BING BING BING!-- the guy who said they're a fraud is so correct. Any caffeinated soda, like dr pepper, does as much and more. Drink two while you're at it, for the energy drink effect, with better taste and less cost.

1.Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is naturally occurring in the human body. "Conditionally essential" means that in some situations or under certain conditions, as, for example, in situations of high stress or physical exertion, increased amounts of taurine are eliminated from the body and cannot be replaced by the body in sufficient amounts.
Taurine is involved in vital functions of the human body. Taurine acts as an antioxidant and has been shown to promote detoxification by binding together with harmful substances and thereby accelerating their excretion from the body.
Taurine is also contained in various foodstuffs – like, for example, scallops, fish
and poultry – and is added to most baby food.
2.Glucuronolactone is a carbohydrate.
It is naturally occurring in the human body, where it is involved in detoxification processes, supporting the body in eliminating waste substances.
Glucuronolactone is also present in various foodstuffs, such as grain and red wine.
3.Caffeine is known for its beneficial effects on mental and physical functions. It has been shown to improve, for example, reaction speed, alertness and concentration. Caffeine also stimulates fat-burning during endurance activities and thereby helps to use fat stores in the body, which results in a more efficient supply of energy.
Caffeine is contained in many foodstuffs, such as coffee, tea and chocolate. One can of Red Bull® Energy Drink contains approximately the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee.
4.B-group vitamins play an important role in energy metabolism, such as the build-up and break-down of carbohydrates, fat and protein. B vitamins are also shown to support mental and physical performance.

Glucose. Caffiene does not give you energy, it is a drug that speeds up your metabolism, so it might appear as if you have more energy.
