I asked the question yesterday would you leave your child in the car. A couple of people said that they would leave their child in the car with the car still running but with all of the doors locked. How is that considered safe? Am I the only one that has windows on my car? Hello!! Criminals that want to steal your car can easily bust out your window and take off in your running vehicle. If anything, leaving your car running is asking for trouble. Why would anyone with any kind of common sense leave a car running with a child inside while they are inside of a store? Do people not see the news everyday where people innocently run inside of a store for a split second only to come out that their vehicle and child have been stolen?

I would be concerned about carbon monoxide poisoning except for windy days. There are other concerns as well. There are temperature concerns and the risk of a child getting out of a car seat and playing with the vehicle controls. Unless an adult is left with the child, a child should not be left unattended in a vehicle. There are exceptions, but they are very few and need not be mentioned in any detail.

I live in a very cold climate (northwestern US) and in the winter a lot of people do this in order to prevent exposing children to the extreme temperatures. I personally do not believe this is okay UNLESS you are w/ in feet of the vehicle and it can be in your eyesight at all times (difficult when you are running errands). When my daughter was a baby, I would just keep her in the carseat and put a blanket over the top until I got in the store. And, if she was sick, I just wouldn't take her out. Besides the kidnapping risk, older children can play w/ the vehicle taking out of park and have a horrible accident. There are numerous dangers w/ leaving children in the car.

It's sort of ridiculously crazy and I don't understand it either. In the town in fl that we live in, if the sheriff finds a car running they will break in get the keys and you'll get a ticket. of course they have the slim jim to get in without damage, but they're trying to discourage the crime from happening to start with.

speaking of kids ... I wonder if these are the same people who leave kids in store carts unattended ... know how many times I've seen small children unattended and wanted to leave a little note in the basket saying "next time you may not find your child when you return ... take care of your precious gift before you lose them"

I think there should be a law against it. if a person is too lazy to take their child with them, [even if its only for a second ] shouldnt even have kids. Thats called lazeiness, i would be the first to turn someone in for that.
