Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).

The Catholic Church recognizes the power of sex when it teaches, "Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul."

Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person. A chaste person's body and spirit lives in unity and opposes any behavior that would impair that unity.

Masturbation is contrary to the human dignity of the person and anyone about whom the person has lustful thoughts, and the dignity of human sexuality.

With love in Christ.

As I recall Playboy magazine got asked that questions decades ago and their reserachers didn't find anything totally conclusive.

The Bible is clear on certain things. Jesus, for example, spoke out on fornication (sex outside of marriage, indiscriminant sex outside of marriage) and adultery. Adultery is covered in the 10 commandements. Those are the only edicts from God and the Son of God. Everything else comes from man and parable and story.

Jesus, however, said all should marry.

The Bible clearly says man should leave is family, take a wife, cling to her forever, become one with her.

Jesus further said you must put God above your mother, father, son and daughter. No mention of spouse was given.

So the concept of joining and becoming one forever is considered the thing to do and a husband takes care of his wife's body and a wife takes care of her husband's body.

So this is the proper or virtuous way. Other ways not simply not considered virtuous and some are specifically considered no-nos.

Anything that interefers with the natural flow of things or that can become an addiction or that is done for pure gratification of the flesh is considered wrong or not virtuous.

Finally, the for believers the ultimate concept is that God has the final say on things.

So, basically, one should concentrate less on doing things like mastrubation and more on finding a spouse.

So, as to the definative answer, there is no biblical statement I am totally aware of that overtly documents the act as being totally wrong, except by extrapolation. Some Christians, for example, believe drinking any form of intoxicant is wrong, hence Jesus and his disciples sinned and intended to sin in the future over the Pesach tradition. God is the final judge, however.

I don't think anyone here can argue that finding a mate is not the ultimate best way to do things.

I do not believe in the existence of sin. God did not crete sin. For that goes against the concept of free will and unconditional love. God created us to free will and loves us unconditonally therefore the concept of sins is illogical.

The concept of masterbation as a sin is something that some religions choose to create a belief in. There is no logic in this. Why then would God create something (to include sex) and then if one chooses to experience it then it becomes a sin??

Again; I am offering what I believe is true and only you can determine what is truth for yourself. Many use the Bible as a tool to explain sin however; who do you know can honestly and truthfully say that they know their interpretations of the scriptures are accurate?

I really don't have the answer, I wish I did because I hear this a lot from young people today. What do you think about when you do it? Do you think bad thoughts? Because our thoughts can become sin.

I have been a Christian for many years, and have yet to hear a good answer, pray about it and ask God. He knows all our thoughts anyway, so don't be afraid to pray to God about masturbation.

I have been able to give an answer to about every question a young person asks, but this has been the toughest one.

Sorry I can't help you any better.

Whoa...de ja vu or however it's spelled. Didn't we just cover this?

Yes it's a sin because it's adultery. Adultery is defined as sex with anyone other than your spouse. Sex with self is not sex with your spouse.

If you're really serious about this issue, pick up the book "Every Man's Battle," it will help you immensely.

Dude, honestly, so it's a sin. It doesn't mean you're going to Hell, only rejecting Jesus will do that. Sin, repent, don't do it again.

I love it when people thumbs down me for speaking the TRUTH. Just means more treasure in Heaven, cha-ching!

Jesus said that if you even LOOK at a woman who is not your wife with LUST in your heart, you have committed Adultery. What's so hard to understand about that?

People, people it has nothing to do with sperm being "wasted" or spilled on the ground, it has everything to do with the wicked thoughts going on in your head at the time....

NO!!!!!
The reason catholics thinks its a sin is because they call it a crime against god to spill your sperm on the ground. They believe sperm contains the life of god, and when you just 'kill' it off, its like killing a child god would have wanted to be born.

Unfortunately, according to catholicism your are killing gods wanted children in your sleep. If you dont masturbate, your body naturaly puches it out in your sleep to make room for the fresher sperms.

So clearly, if your a logical person you can figure out the rest with out me explaining it to you.

It depends on what religion, but in Islam it is a sin, because you are fulfilling you desires in a way that doesn't make sense to human nature and reason.
Example... a person that masturbates, what does he get out of it... nothing but pleasure, and where does that get you? no where... have you learned anything by masturbating no...
This world is temporary and death is near, so you have to research the truth... don't you fill discusted by masturbating yourself?

Haven't you ever seen Monty Python's "The Meaning Of Life"?

DAD:
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.

I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.

You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,

Because

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

CHILDREN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

GIRL:
Let the heathen spill theirs
On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can't be found.

CHILDREN:
Every sperm is wanted.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.

MUM:
Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.

MEN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
WOMEN:
If a sperm is wasted,...
CHILDREN:
...God get quite irate.

PRIEST:
Every sperm is sacred.
BRIDE and GROOM:
Every sperm is good.
NANNIES:
Every sperm is needed...
CARDINALS:
...In your neighbourhood!

CHILDREN:
Every sperm is useful.
Every sperm is fine.
FUNERAL CORTEGE:
God needs everybody's.
MOURNER #1:
Mine!
MOURNER #2:
And mine!
CORPSE:
And mine!

NUN:
Let the Pagan spill theirs
O'er mountain, hill, and plain.
HOLY STATUES:
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.

EVERYONE:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite iraaaaaate!

It is not. The sin of Onan was in not knocking up his brother's widow, ( spilled it in the dust, on her back, whatever). the bible is silent on masturbation and those who don't think they can speak for god should likewise be silent on it.

Oops must be being marked down by those who speak for god. Funny how that always happens.

The last ent wife has a point. Only think of god when you masturbate,
