My boyfriend is lactose intolerant. I don't know if this would have anything to do with it, but on several different occasions..he's suffered this pain on his right side...it subsides whenever he passes gas, but comes back shortly after. He gets very uncomfortable and paces around the house all night. He's going to a doctor once he gets insurance, but I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas of what this could be?

I'm not sure it has anything to do with the lactose intolerance, either. You might be describing a pain that I have had as well. It was just under where the rib cage stopped on the right side. It came and went for maybe a week, all with same "uncomfortable" feeling. Finally, one night, the pain became unbearable and my fiancee said screw it, we're going to the emergency room (I also did not have insurance). I didn't want to go, I was sure I could just tough it out.

Right away, they knew it was my gall bladder. The pain was so bad, they put me on heavy narcotics right away. They ended up taking it out the next morning. They showed me pictures of where gangrene had been forming (I know! Gross!), so if I hadn't gone when I did, it might have been a more serious problem. I might have even died.

I'm not saying that's what it is. But it sounds like it might be gall stones. If it's further down, it could be something intestinal. But the fact that you know something's wrong (pacing all night is not a good sign) should be a huge red flag. I know walking into a hospital without insurance is daunting (What a crock the american healthcare system is! but that's the subject of a different rant...). But catching something before it becomes life-threatening is worth it.

Trust your gut (no pun intended). Take him to the doctor. If you can't wait for an appointment, take him to the Emergency Room.

Does he get the pain after he's eaten a dairy product? He can try taking lactaid (available without a prescription) whenever he eats a dairy product. He could also try taking probiotics or acidophillus capsules daily (from the health food store, either will help his body build up the bacteria colonies that break down lactose).

It could be appendicitis. Next time he has the pain, he should go to ER to have it checked out. It could end up very serious if it is that and isn't treated.
