I heard a while back that there was a new law trying to be passed that effectively repealed the necessity for camera site locations to be made public knowledge via websites and so on, meaning they can plonk one of these wretched devices down anywhere and they don't have to tell you where it is until you find it, or sit a camera van wherever they please. Does anyone know if this was passed or does the law stand as it did, whereby they have to tell you where all the cameras are, fixed and mobile?

I have not yet heard if they passed the idea on to allow departments to not make it all public knowledge if they don't want to. In Texas anyways.

However, from the agencies that I have talked to that utilize these, the actually do make sure that they put in the papers and internet where the camera is going to be. They do this as a way to slow motorists down. You might want to call it a "speed deterrent".

By telling the public where they are going to put the camera, there will be a highly liklihood that those people will actually slow down where the camera is posted, hence, it is getting people to slow down and that makes driving a little safer. Even if it is just for one day in one certain spot.

They are not putting these cameras up as a way to get more revenue from the tickets for the departments. Traffic fines themselves are there to punish and deter people from speeding or breaking anyother of the traffic laws.

it is also a known fact the speed cameras CAUSE more accidents than they are supposed to prevent because people are watching their speedometers rather than the road in front of them. there was nothing wrong with the old rule of "10 % plus 2 MPH over" (so if you in a 30 zone you could get away with 35 MPH with a caution). but some of these cameras trigger on 32 MPH!!.

Don't know wher you are, but where I come from it is legal. They even hide the cameras in modified rubish bins on the side of the road. But if you don't want to get caught, jsut obey the speed limits.

There is an excellent site called pepipoo ran by a guy called Mike. It is the most informative place for speed camera legislation. He hates them too

Unfortunately they don't have to tell you anything, but you can do something about it! My friend Richard swears by this stuff, he can't seem to keep his lead foot off the gas but he hasn't had a ticket from one of those darn things yet.

It depends on which country you live in...

The easy solution? Don't exceed the speed limit.
