I too suffered from leg cramps, probably due to back problems, but my doctor wisely advised me to drink tonic water. The active ingredient is quinine. It tastes awful, but it works. Maybe mix the tonic water with orange juice or something to make consumption easier.

Sounds like a calcium deficiency to me........muscle cramps and numbness, tingling in the arms and legs, are some of the first signs of this.
Calcium is a natural sedative and tends to settle you nerves. For a woman 19 - 54 years of age you actually need about 1300mg of calcium per day!! Most people don't get anywhere near that. It amounts to about 4 glasses milk/milk substitute per day. Try soya milk which has been fortified with calcium especially for older women, it has a yummy nutty flavor. Or perhaps you could try a calcium supplement from your pharmacist?? Keep up the the cod liver oil tablets cos they are important for calcium absorption, as in Vitamin D. Calcium needs adequate amounts of Vitamin D to be present in the body for proper absorption to occur. Vitamins A and C are also necessary for proper calcium absorption........................
Carrots are an excellent source of Vitamin A as are dark green fruit and vegies and yellow fruit and vegies. Try not to have a diet too high in carbohydrates, i.e.: bread and bread products.

I'm not sure what diagnosis her doctor gave her. Also, I'm not a medical doctor, but I trained as a health professional. Anyway, from what I gather, if the cramping is precipitated by the cold, she may have a condition called intermittent claudication.
The standard treatment for intermittent claudication is lowering cholesterol. Majority of doctors tend to prescribe cholesterol=lowering drugs e.g the "statins" e.g simvistatin, a drug called Lipitor etc. About 70% of patients with intermittent claudication, tend to express marked improvement when taking cholesterol lowering drugs/meds.
If I were you, I'd get a second opinion just to be on the safe side.

Your mum suffers from bad blood circulation which causes cramps. The doctor has given her vitamin C and cod liver oil which should help her blood circulation. So far so good.
Other than that she can make sure to exercise, not be overweight and keep warm.

The best thing and hardest thing is to try and do what the doctor says and live a healthy lifestyle. I worked graveyards for a number of years and found myself getting leg cramps from exhaustion. I highly recommend sleeping and exercising the recommended amounts. Drinking lots of water and also eating healthy whole foods.

I went to 15 doctors before I was given a treatable disease. Most doctors are too busy to mess with diseases that they are not involved with. Restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and several other, several other diseases/syndromes could be the problem. If you have a pain clinic in your area, send her there. You could also check the paper for support groups that have these or other leg disorders. Please, keep searching. There could be something extreme that needs medical attention or there could be a problem that a specialist in the field of her problem could help with. Look in the yellow pages for arthritis doctors or chronic pain specialists. This needs a diagnosis now.

My wife is also 55 and has severe leg cramps. She has been to many different doctors and they haven't helped much ... she is still working on it. I did find a web page AllCalm.com and bought this for her. It helps her a lot.

Get her a combo of pottassium ,magnesium and vitamin d.it helps me.also fish oil capsules will help.it has omegas in it which we all need.i am so lucky to have a pharmacist that takes time with people no matter how busy he is,that is very important.good luck.

potassium, H2O, and stretching. If she increases potassium and H2O that will resolve most of her problems (in all likelihood). THe stretching is just an extra!!!
