They are all very hyperactive and aren't nearly as calm and friendly towards people as a golden retriever. They're not exceptionally loyal either and aren't the prettiest dogs in the world either. They work well with owners who have very active lifestyles but America is full of big fat people so why are labs the most common breed of dog here?

Unless you have personally met every single Labrador Retriever, saying "they are all very hyperactive" is a gross generalization.

Some are hyper, some are calm. Some are loyal, some are less so. Some are drop dead gorgeous, some aren't.

They aren't necessarily the most common dog, they are just the dog with the highest number of registrations with the American Kennel Club, AKC.

Personally, I suspect the American Pit Bull Terrier which is NOT recognized by AKC is the most common dog in America, next to the Ubiquitious "mixed breed".

I have a yellow labrador puppy, and he is extremely calm. I picked him for his manner. He is not considered beautiful by the AKC because of his light coat, light eyes, and liver pigmentation;however, he is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen. I prefer the thick labs that look like smaller Newfoundlands.

Golden Retrievers are nice as well. I also considered buying one.

Sometimes beauty isn't all about looks:)

By they way, I have two children and weigh 105 at 5'6. I guess you could say--I'm not a fat lab owner.

I'm sure there are plenty of fat Golden Retriever owners as well.

Why the fat comment regarding labs? Both are high needs dogs?

Maybe larger people need a more active animal to help them start getting into shape.

Whenever I see larger people exercising--It makes me happy. I don't look down on other people.

Now why did you have to be rude and insult fat people? What does it have to do with Labs or dogs in general?

NOT all Labs are hyper. They may be early on as puppies and when they mature. But they DO settle down. Labs are also very loyal and friendly. They are good with children. They are like a family dog just like any other breed.

Labs are very beautiful to me...I prefer the square head and they are so regal. If you don't like them, then that's your problem. Go find another breed to suit you.

I can't say. It's usually more dog than the average owner can handle. They don't always make good "first" dogs. Maybe because you can beat them with a stick over the head and they barely notice? Perhaps because it's the only breed people can identify?

Didn't this come from newspaper which only used the AKC registration statistics?

Big fat people huh? That's so nice of you.. I do not think labs are number 1 anywhere.. Don't know where you heard that.. But is it really necessary to insult people?
