There are two types of dietary iron, heme iron (which comes from the blood of animals) and non-heme iron, which comes from vegetables. Both types supply you with all the iron you need, but heme iron is easier to digest.

Pound for pound, clams are the best source of of naturally occurring dietary iron, having 25mg of iron per 3oz serving. Meats, milk, shellfish, and dark-green leafy vegetables are also good sources. Also, many cereals and some beverages are fortified with iron and other vitamins and minerals.

For the record, pregnant women should avoid liver. While it does have a high iron content (because of the amount of blood contained in the liver), it also as a very high Vitamin A content, which can damage the baby's developing nervous system if ingested in large amounts.

Any dark green leafy vegetable and red meat. I agree about the liver but to be honest I can't touch the stuff. My husband thought he was being sweet when I was pregnant so he made me live and onions to bring up my iron. The problem was, that was the only thing that made me sick the entire time I was pregnant. I was hanging over the deck sick as a dog just from the smell of it. Gotta love that liver....
