They hate it when you think of yourself as an 'individual'. They are trying to get you to think of yourself as a cog in a machine, not a real individual person. Drill Sgts are supposed to get pissed and make you drop and give them 100. When you refer to them as 'you', you are also disrespecting them. Just NEVER say, "sorry sgt"....lol! Believe me. As far as I know the army does this too. Not sure about the squids or sissy airforce though. You have to 'request permission to speak' because you have to learn obedience.

The first thing that Marine Corps Recruit Training (more commonly known as 'boot camp') must do is break you down from a civilian in order to make you a Marine, so task one is to remove your identity. They do this by taking away your clothes and your hair. Second, they have to get you organized into a chosive unit, and you can't do that if everyone is worried about 'me', so they force you to refer to yourself by your title. Until your Drill Instructor hands you the Eagle, Glove and Anchor, that title is recruit.

Requesting permission to speak instills obedience to orders. You do what you are told. You learn to use your judgement. You know how important what you have to say is, but is it worth going against what you are told?

This is all a part of the process for building a Marine.

Funny one Mike O!

It is designed to reduce you to a basic robot that has no persnality and does not have independent thinking. Once this is achieved they can rebuild you to take orders without question and follow the code of the regiment without question.
Marines are not known for their intelligence, although some were intelligent before they joined ( or were they?) If you want to avoid this type of intimidation, complete your degree or Phd and apply for officer school in a service that rewards thinking outside the square and uses your talents in a constructive way, not just as canon fodder.

Because Marines are stripped of their personal identity to make them better killing machines.

Works great in combat. Not so great for the Marine, but good for the war machine.

The best thing for you to do is tap DI on the shoulder and tell him that you have some concerns that you would like to discuss.

He'll straighten you out.
