Mutton is a sheep that is over 2 years old.......Lamb is only lamb up to 8 weeks old and after that it becomes Hoggett.
Mutton therefore is from a fully mature sheep and has quite a distinct flavour. It should be cooked very slowly infused with rosemary and garlic as by cooking it this way it will be very tender. It is delicious to serve cold with redcurrant jelly and it can be served hot with caper sauce.
Most of us are buying either hoggett or mutton when we go to the butchers!....so you have probably eaten it already!
It is also excellent to make stews with and indian dishes.

Mutton is actually lamb. I've had it but don't really like it. It has a strong taste to get use to. When cooking, the smell isn't pleasant either. Some people say that it's all in the way you cook it for the ''mutton'' to taste good, but my taste buds still says no.

In the US, Mutton is sometime sold as Lamb. I think it stopped in Los Angeles, because the increase in Armenian immigrants, who know what lamb should taste like. Mutton is fatty, but has a lot stronger flavor than lamb. The flavor is called Gamey and to most American, a not very pleasant flavor. Older lamb also has that flavor. I think most meat would develop a gamey flavor if its allowed to eat grass and weed.

Mutton is lamb above a certain age.

Some people dislike it but I love it. I have only just discovered it and wish I had done before.

It has quite a strong meat flavour and cooks best long and slow - therefore good in the slo-cooker. It is cheaper than the younger lamb and I think it is great!

Lucky you if you can get it near you!!!

mutton is lamb. It tastes like lamb. lol.

Kinda like beef but it has a strong and unique taste to it. That 'unique" taste doesn't really taste like any other meat. It's a red meat.

tastes nice barbequed or stirfried. Spices that go well with it are mint, rosemary or lemon. Hot peppers go with everything!

I ate it once as a young kid at a function. It kinda tastes like roast beef, but still different, and I found it quite greasy. I would have rather had roast beef or chicken.
