He's 6mths old and just been neutered. I've seen him wipe his bum on our carpet once prior to neutering, and once after. This morning I picked him up a while after he'd done it and discovered he had poo caught in the fuff around his bum- he is so fluffy, and so I think that must have been what he was trying to dislodge. Sorry to be a little graphic, but how can we help him with this, do long haired cats usually have this problem? Should we get his hair trimmed around his bum? Please advise!

Hi Emily Jane...this is quite common with long-haired cats. Most people find it helpful to regularly trim the hair around the bum to prevent the poo from sticking.

Unfortuately long haired cats will have this problem. Even with our British Blues, they have al little. I suggest getting your kitty to a professional groomer where they will paper him and trim down some of the hair. Not only will this be good for your carpet, he will be meowing with delight with a good old wash and groom! Good luck :-)

I think you should get him trimmed around his bum. Not bald or shaven, but just short. Poor thing must feel aweful with poo stuck in his fur. Cats are very clean, you see, and hate it when they are dirty.
Good luck!

Yes, i know what you mean. One of my cats does that occasionally I do try to trim her as often as i can but there has been the odd occasion when she will waddle passed me and you just think oh know in the bath we go. It is a nightmare and i hate when it happens.

you got yourself a long haired cat. You have an obligation to groom him daily, down to the skin, with a comb and possible trim his bum fur. My long haired cat never gets poo caught on her bum, but then she is well groomed by me. I don't believe in neglecting coat care on long haired cats.

yes you may want to get it trimmed. If you do it yourself be extremly carful. cat's skin cuts easily. Go to a groomer and get them to show you how.
It may be his food. His feces should be solid, not runny enough to get every where. Get him on a high quality food from the pet store. try NUTRO or Techni -Cal. Royal Canin if you know the breed.
