because it's really hard to believe that someone who doesn't even know you would even care of wanting to save you. or do they just do that because they think it's their "responsibility" to save your soul, and if they don't do that they will be held responsible for eternal damnation? or can anyone think of something else? because i certainly don't believe that there's such a thing as free ride.

it really makes me wonder...

note: i said SOME, NOT all, so that no one can say that i'm generalizing.

I believe their sincerity, and it is truly frightening

Many Christians proselytize out of a sense of duty (and the responsibility that goes with it) rather than a sense of joy and knowing that it is God who does the work. The latter view gives all the glory to God in the act of salvation, where the former view must divide responsibility between God and man at best, the same with the proselytizee having the "choice" of acceptance or rejection of God. This makes God only half a God for both people.

So, to answer your question, yes, I believe that people are sincere when they try to "save" others -- but they are misguided as to their reasoning.

The people who come to my door, I generally beleive are sincere. Mostly because my grandmother, the jehova's witness, is. She, and her side of the family, beleive that there are great things in store for the jehova's witnesses and they must do their best while alive to help everyone else. My uncle once said, when I asked (Which I frequently did. I beleive the question was normally "Why, oh WHY?!"), that it was like people who knew in advance that a volcano was going to go off. They had to try and warn everyone else before it went because it wouldn't be right not to.
I also beleive there's a special circle of hell reservbed just for them, but that's another matter.

The people online, however, those who troll chatrooms etc, I have trouble beleiving are anything more than teenagers out for a quick ego boost to show how much better than the heathens they are. They have a wholy different circle of hell next to the other one, but shared with bus drivers who drive off just as you get to the door. In the rain.

I experience so much freedom (that I yet can't describe) that I just want to share it. Freedom from guilt, freedom from shame. (Listen to 'I am free' by the Newsboys.)

When I find a good novel or see a good movie I let other's know that I found something great to read/see. Probably when you find something that makes you happy you let others know don't you?

Yes, some do it from responsibility. If I saw my neighbors house on fire and they were sitting in their living room oblivious to the danger I would feel responsible if they died (and fair enough, I had the power to warn them). A person who is not saved by Christ has their afterlife in danger.

Also, it takes a lot of guts to tell someone about God. Christians get a lot of flack for it. Thank God that someone got over their fears enough to talk to you.

Bless you.

I believe some people are sincere in their conviction in trying to "save" others or convince others to give their lives to Christ. Part of their duty is to witness to others.

I also believe some people have "false" concern and are confrontational and annoying in their approach. This approach tends to turn some people off. Who are they to determine if someone is "saved" or not after knowing you for less than five minutes? What criteria are they using? Who put them in the position to make these determinations?

I suppose you just have to use your instincts and trust their hearts until they show you otherwise. Then you can say those some are full of s--t! Hope this helps. . . :-)

Of course there are people who care about total strangers and want to help them without expecting anything in return. Stop and think about it. Even here in Yahoo Answers there are plenty of people who try to give true, accurate and helpful answers to total strangers without expecting anything in return. How much more would someone who believed be concerned about your eternal soul, even if you are a total stranger. Why should we not care and be concerned about your eternal destiny? Of course we want to see everyone saved. It is the heart of God, and it is our heart also.

Some are sincerely concerned for my "soul", even though I am convinced that such a thing only exists in the imagination.

Others, well...

No, I don't believe in the sincerity of people who do this. I think that they are misguided, presumptuous, condescending, and arrogant, and that they do this because they enjoy feeling superior to others and calculating how many brownie points they're scoring with the Big Guy.

There have been many serial killers who genuinely believed they were "helping" the people they killed by "freeing their souls" or "ending their pain". Their victims would beg to differ were they still around.

The religious falsely claim the "right" to proselytize, that they are "doing god's work". If a rapist went around saying he was doing nature's work by impregnating women, would we tolerate that?

The old legal maxim says, "Your ability to throw a punch ends at the tip of my nose", meaning you can do what you want as long as it doesn't affect anyone who doesn't want to be involved. The same goes for the religious and their filth - oops, faith: "Your ability to preach religion ends at the drums of my ears".

If the religious want to have their religion, they can go to church.

If the religious want ME to have their religion, they can go to hell.

First I do believe them, they do it because they love you and know what will happen to you if you dont, also it is thier responsibility, because when they go to heaven God will ask them why did you not help that person. If you accept Jesus into your life you get the most overwhelming love for others and sometimes want to cry because they do not know what is ahead of them. LISTEN TO THEM!!! it is to help you not themselves.
