High blood pressure or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. The arteries are the vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all of the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase the blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80; blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called “pre-hypertension”, and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered high blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure, which is the top number, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries. The diastolic pressure, which is the bottom number, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure, therefore, reflects the minimum pressure to which the arteries are exposed.

Smoking.
Smoking can lead to the build-up of plaque that clogs the blood vessels that supply the heart with blood. A smoker's risk of heart attack is double that of non-smokers. However, American Heart Association reports have shown that quitting smoking can eventually repair the damage done by smoking.

Exercise
Exercise and physical activity help strengthen your heart, reduce stress and help you lose weight—all of which can help lower your blood pressure.

Diet
Statistics show that many people who have high blood pressure are also overweight. Maintaining a healthier, low-fat diet can help you lose weight and may lower your blood pressure.

Salt intake
Many people consume far more salt than their bodies actually need. Eating too much salt can contribute to high blood pressure. Reducing the amount of salt in your diet can help lower your blood pressure.

Stress
Stress can come from many places—your job, financial pressures, family issues. It can also contribute to high blood pressure. Look for ways to reduce the stress in your life and you may find that your blood pressure improves.

Lifestyle changes may help, but they may not be enough
For many people, exercise and making healthier food choices are helpful, but not enough to get them into the BP Success Zone (less than 140/90 to 120/80 mm Hg or below).# There are many different blood pressure medications that can help.

You could maintain normal blood pressure by taking in medications. A hypertensive person has the danger of suffering from stroke or heart attacks, that is why a maintenance dose is vital, because you will never know when your blood pressure will shoot up, and will debilitate/paralyse you or even kill you. It is condition which is very unpredictable. This time you are fine then the next minute, your BP shoots up, so follow take in your maintenance medication religiously, even if you are feeling well.
