I think it's sad that they've memorized a fat book full of verses they don't understand.

I don't know about memorizing but I do know if more people read the Bible there would be a lot fewer questions like the one we see here.
Question like "If we all believe in the same God why do we all have to believ in Christ to be saved?" The Bible clearly tell us why and shows the God of other is not the one true God.
Jhn 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
There is the answer Jesus is the only way the only way to fully understand this is by reading the Bible

Well I will say I have read the entire Bible three times and studied much of it still there is very little I remember I wish people would go read the Bible instead having me look things up for them. Last night I spent three hours looking for Suffer not a Witch to live. Because I had used the quote in one of my questions and someone didn't believe me. If anyone else wants to know It is Exodus 22:18 I of course thought it was a different book so had to go searching. BB

I think that most people have actually memorized relatively few verses and that most know key words of scripture verses that they've read that apply to some of the questions and could post them if they had help. There are some good, free, bible downloads that have excellent key word searches, and copy and paste is great! Those that have memorized huge chunks of the bible are just regular, but truly blessed people.

Yes, I've wondered about that too. But I really give it to them, memorizing any large book is a titanic endeavor, which one can at least attain the admiration of others to have been able to achieve.
As to why they ask others to read the bible in a manner implying they think others never have, I believe it's because they assume that they've become far more religious and pious having taken the whole scripture by heart, than any other person who has probably never read one part of the Bible in a regular and complete manner.
But the question that remains: is it really about memorizing? Surely, not all those who've managed to memorize the bible have the right understanding and explanation of every word and every verse. Even in one same denomination, the explanation of one same verse varies sometimes drastically from one pastor to another, and from one priest to another.
Of course, when you've memorized the book of basics and the manual of any faith that you follow, it helps you confirm and support your argument with others, as well as know why you believe, and exactly in what you believe. On the other hand it helps you decide, whether you're totally and conclusively convinced with what you believe in, or whether you should find yourself with a need to look farther away into questions and wonders that may still linger in the back of your head and leave a certain emptiness in your soul.
I wish I could memorize the Bible, but the thing is I know with utter certainty, just where my salvation lies, without going through the effort of memorizing. I may not have all the answers to questions and riddles that others may bring forth to me to make me question my faith, but nonetheless I know, that in the end, my salvation rests in the hands of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Don't let those Bible memorizers annoy you, but take them as a probable voice of Jesus Himself inviting you to give Him more of your time, to know Him better and listen to what He probably wants to say to you. Be at peace, and may His light always shine upon you and lead your way.

I've been reading the Bible cover to cover now for almost 4 years and haven't memorized it all. I've never met anyone who HAS memorized the entire Bible.

I tell people to read the bible when they ask a ques./ make a comment that can easily be answered by reading the passage...I've noticed many times these questions are meant to be demeaning in some way....sorry if i've ever offended, I only mean to be answering in kind.....By the way, i have almost never used a Bible verse to answer questions that i can answer by paraphrasing what i have learned from the Bible, so as not to offend the thin-skinned and to be easily understood....

They are Minister-wannabe's. Perhaps they have such low self-esteem that after reading and memorizing the greatest work of fiction they get a false sense of importance from preaching into thin air.

Why does it seem that some people feel the need to ridicule other people for reading and studying their Bible?

Intellectual snobbery exists in all disciplines, including religion. Ignore it. Besides, who cares if someone memorized a book of fairy tales?
