years ago I used to hear that Germans even if they know your language ; they prefer to speak German , in their country . What's the truth about that ? & why ?

Not totally true. If you enter in the German part of this site, under "Geselschaft und Kulture" ..."Sprachen", you will see by yourself they know pretty much English.
If your question were about the French, the statement posted in your question would for sure be true.

Of course they prefer to speak their own language in their own country. Still, I doubt as high a percentage of native English speakers would know top speak another language as it is customary with German native speakers.

You ask why Germans use German in Germany, even if they know another language?? Maybe because it's our mother tongue... And because not every German speaks English...
