Dandruff results from an abnormal rate of exfoliation caused by mineral build up and fungal activity. If your scalp is exfoliating at a rapid rate, flaking will resemble dandruff or the appearance of dry skin. If your scalp is exfoliating too slowly, the scalp will appear and feel oily from the excess sebum build up. The oily build up coupled with minerals, such as, calcium from your water begins to flake off the scalp and give the appearance of dandruff. Choose a shampoo that will clean your hair without leaving too much residue-such products are often labeled "clarifying." Use smaller amounts of shampoo and conditioner to avoid scalp irritation from over-washing. Rinsing thoroughly prevents dandruff. The build up of compounds from styling products and perspiration contributes to the problem of an oily and flaky scalp. Spend an extra minute to scrub under the water-your scalp will thank you.Avoiding excessive styling products prevents dandruff. Hair gels, creams, waxes, and dyes can irritate the scalp, so stay away from using these products in excess, if at all. Try to find products with fewer harsh chemicals and more natural ingredients. Avoid excessively fatty and oily foods, as well as additives and preservatives. Heavy fats work their way into skin oils, causing the imbalanced secretion of oils on your scalp that leads to dandruff. Taking Vitamins A and B promotes a healthy scalp and regulates the secretion of oil. Stress in other parts of your life (such as the fluctuating hormones of the female cycle) will affect the state of your scalp (and the rest of your body), so be aware of your mental and emotional health and take time every day to wind down and relax.

Selsun Blue. If the dandruff is the result of a systemic yeast syndrome then preventing means balancing your systemic yeast. Check out www.hufa.org - the yeast link, for more info on that.

Try tar-gel shampoo. I have hair problems, too. My doctor said I shouldn't wash my hair every day with it so I use baby shampoo mostly and Tar treatment twice to three times a week.
