where did this originate? what has counting got to do with being reliable?

I'm just guessing, but it might have come from the idea that when you're looking at your options, you can 'count' the other person as one of them as they're dependable.

Do you mean "you can count ON me" ? Maybe I could if you could write it properly but since you don't "how could I rely on you" I am not sure I could..

They'd be more likely to say 'you can count on me', which means 'you can depend on me'.

I'm not certain...but I think it is related to 'you can count me in'
