>>Don't Protestants believe anything that is not in the bible?<<
Sometimes they don't even believe things that ARE in the Bible, such as Oral Tradition and the Hail Mary:
"hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle." (2Thes. 2:15)
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, (Luke 1:28)
Blessed Art Thou amongst women, (Luke 1:42)
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, (Luke 1:42)
Holy Mary, Mother of God, (Luke 1:43)
Pray for us sinners, now (James 5:16)
and at the hour of our death.
Amen

(2Timothy3:16) tells us that All the scriptures contained in the Bible are inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, reproving and setting things straight, so that the man/woman of God may be prepared for r=every good work.So yes everything that we need to know about is contained in the Bible, no not the Big bang theory, that isn't in there, no.But the Best and the most truthful information, wisdom and knowledge is in the Bible for sure!

The Bible is about God's relationship with Man. It doesn't pretend to be anything else.
You may have misunderstood the argument they were having which was probably about a difference in interpretation of the Bible.
Christians are generally encouraged to study and read the Bible themselves and since we are all different we often have different interpretations about different parts. This accounts for the different sects.
However, all christians believe in God and that his son Jesus died for our sins so that we could have a relationship with him.

Sola Scriptora (by scripture alone) is not found in the Bible. In fact, scripture supports putting our trust in the authority of the ecclesiastical authorities of the Church. The idea of sola scriptora started with Martin Luther who could even accept all of the scriptures himself and even wanted to edit out the book of James.
There are some basic facts to know about which source should be the authoritative source:
1. Satan himself used scripture to tempt our Lord, so why should we rely on our interpretation of scripture?
Are there people claiming to preach the Gospel who actually pervert it? Yes, Ga 1:6-8 Paul says some converts pervert the gospel: I am surprised at you! In no time at all you are deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ, and are accepting another gospel. Actually, there is no “other gospel,” but I say this because there are some people who are upsetting you and trying to change the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel that is different from the one we preached to you may he be condemned to hell!
2. The Church existed before the Bible. So, it stands to reason that it is the ecclesiastical authorities that we should rely on. This is called the magisterium.
. Eph 3:9-10 It is through God's church (which has apostolic succession) that the messages of the Gospel is revealed: and of making all people see how God’s secret plan is to be put into effect. God, who is the Creator of all things, kept his secret hidden through all the past ages, in order that at the present time, by means of the church, that angelic rulers and powers in the heavenly world might learn of his wisdom in all its different forms.
3. The apostles passed on their authority which Christ gave them. Did the apostles ever succeed anyone in their group? Yes. The appointment of Matthias as an apostle to replace Judas was the first step in apostolic succession. Acts 1:23-26.
1 Co 4:1 Paul says, “You should think of us [apostles] as Christ’s servants, who have been put in charge of God’s secret truths.”
Why did the apostles preach the Gospel? A. I Co 9:16 The apostle Paul says, “... I preach the gospel. After all, I am under orders to do so.” Ro 1:1 “From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus and an apostle chosen and called by God to preach His Good News.” Mt 28:19-20 Jesus Christ told the eleven disciples to, “Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and ... teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. 1 P 1:12 “God revealed to these prophets that their work was not for their own benefit, but for yours, as they spoke about those things which you have now heard from the messengers who announced the Good News by the power of the Holy Spirit. These are things which even the angels would like to understand.
Protestantism naturally begets toleration of error. Rejecting the principle of authority in religion, it has neither criterion nor definition of faith. On the principle that every individual or sect may interpret the deposit of Revelation according to the dictates of private judgment, it gives birth to endless differences and contradictions. Impelled by the law of its own impotence, through lack of any decisive voice of authority in matters of faith, it is forced to recognize as valid and orthodox any belief that springs from the exercise of private judgment. Therefore does it finally arrive, by force of its own premises, at the conclusion that one creed is as good as another; it then seeks to shelter its inconsistency under the false plea of liberty of conscience. The bible contains the truth that we need to know, not what we want to know. If something contradicts with the bible it is false.
