Sometimes the local utilities have a fund to help you with those costs. Rehabbing might be possible: try "Rebuilding Together" -- www.rebuildingtogether.org. There are a lot of nonprofits that will help you with advice and referrals and they'll tell you how to apply for funds. Start with a local church: they'll know who can help. Or go to www.guidestar.org and put in your town name to find a place. Or go to the county United Way and ask them.

Where I live we have the state run department of social services. We also have county agencies - the health department and community action. We also have churches that offer different types of help. If you can locate any one of these in your area, ask them what else is available. They should be able to direct you to other sources of help.
