Hi there. I myself suffer (and I don't use the term lightly) from bipolar. I have been hospitalised for it twice. Bipolar disorder is called such because Bi means 2 and polar means opposites basically it means there are two opposites, those being moods - depression and mania. If you were suffering from mania or hypomania (less severe form of mania) then you would know nothing about it. You would just feel happy, content, confident, intelligent, funny, basically the best you have ever felt. But you would also be talking quicker, get distracted easily and take risks that you wouldn't normally take but to you this would also seem normal and would justify it as "I'm just feeling better about myself, I've always talked this much". Its the people around you who would notice. So I'd listen to your Mum when she says you don't have it (by the sounds of it she'd know). I don;t think she's ignore the fact you have it either she'd want to get you to the doctor and get you on meds to try and control it. Just trust your Mum. I think your probably just going through what every teenager goes through in their teens. I'm 27 and all my friends were the same as you in their teens. Something we all go through. So don't worry and good luck with your career in the Army, I'm sure you'll do great.

I'm 19 and my mother was diagnosed with bipolar 1 a few years back, so I sort of know how you feel. However, it's really hard because teenagers tend to have rather strong mood swings as it is. I think the best thing you could do is talk to your father about his condition (if possible). The more you find out I think the better, especially about the particular type of bipolar he has. Also, just check for other symptoms like how you're handling your relationships and how you spend your money. Also, if you're honest with your mother, and don't hide lots of things from her, I'm sure she'd notice. However, you have to remember, even if you're goal is to be in the army, not getting it checked could lead to a manic attack. If you get one of those once you're in the army you could not only hurt yourself, but get others killed, and I don't think it's something worth risking. I think having support is the most important thing right now. Someone who you can truly talk to and not feel uncomfortable about. When my mother was diagnosed I had someone to talk to that really helped me out. If you don't want to see a shrink though, you can talk to a family counselor instead. They usually don't cost much and it just lets you get things off your chest. So, anyway, I wish you the best of luck with whatever you end up doing!

Bipolar can be different in children than in adults, so if your mom is used to the way your dad is, she might not see that you have it. You need a diagnosis from a doctor. It may be something else that won't keep you from being in the army so that's why you need to see a doctor. Besides, wouldn't it be sad if you had something that was treatable and you didn't get the treatment for it because you thought it was bipolar?
There is also counseling available through your school, and you should try that first.
If it's bipolar, you can't self treat, it will just get worse and worse.

Hellos, while you still may be predisposed to having Bi Polar - as long as you are not actively ruining your life by extremes in actions, you are probably going to be able to make it into the military - after all, it's up to you. You said teen, how much longer do you have to wait to join up?
If you feel you need to be doped up, so you no longer break things, scream at your parents and break up or physically hurt your family and friends - if you no longer want to feel all the highs and lows, then make a plan B - that doesn't include the Military- and does include meds.
You should be able to talk to a counselor, and just ask at school, for them to refer you. it's way common.
Are you actively cutting? how else do you know you are experiencing Bi Polar symptoms?
I'm wondering what more there is to this, you've had to live with your father's symptoms, and just being aware is a huge part of your answer.

You DO NOT want to play with this. If you are bipolar your life will only get worse if you don't treat the disease. And you certaintly don't want to be on the battlefield with a series, untreated illness. You need to go see a psychiatrist, and you are free to go on your own. You do not need a parent's permission to seek medical treatment, but you may need to get an insurance card from her. It is better for both you and your mother if you see a doctor. I have seen what untreated bipolar disorder can do to people. It isn't something that you can treat yourself or wish away. If you thought you might have cancer would you avoid a doctor? Bipolar disorder is a possibly fatal illness. But the good news is that it is treated, and believe me, treatment works and it can help make people with this illness live normal lives.

if you are bipolar, the worst thing you can do is to join the military, it is not a option, you could under all the extra stress hurt yourself or your fellow solders, very extream stress will bring out way more manic episode than that of normal life, The best that you can do now is go to a professional and find out if you are or not, wondering should not be a option either. If you are not than great if you are than under the right medication you can lead a normal life and you can choose another career, We are in the next 8 to 10 years on on the threshold of curring most all mental and emotional disorders. God Bless and good luck to you.

Maybe you shouldn't handle a gun if you are bipolar. You might shoot yourself when you go down or shoot someone when you go up. You probably don't have it because I don't think quickly switching mood repeatedly during the day is a symptom. THoughts of death is my concern. Go see a doctor. If you dream of joining the army, I think you don't know what the Army is like. Dream Higher.

If you will see a Doctor he can prescribe normally medication that will help you live a normal life. My daughter is bi-polar, but she refuses to take med's or even to admit she is Bi-polar. This is not something you have done, it is as simple as to be diagnosed and you may have to try different medication, I can't see where the Army would not allow you to enlist, after all you did not have this choice, this was handed down to you, so you must continue to try. there are progams.

I would definitely do some research on the internet. I suggest checking out webmd.com about bi-polar and they usually have links to wonderful sites where I'm sure you can find the self-help you need. They usually have online forums where you can talk to other people about the disorder itself which is a really important step to solving a problem. Good luck with your dreams!

i have that too-- my moods can go like a roller coaster-- its soo bad-- and it affects everyone around me-- id be so happy one moment then someone would tell me something that obviously i hate and there you go- it wrecks my whole day.. and i dwell over it-- i just went to the doctors because I couldnt handle it anymore-- just crying over stupidness.. I think you should talk to your family doctor.. and its you who knows best not your mom -- I did not tell mines because I know she would make a comment that would make me even more upset! If you maybe get medication for it now hopefully it would make you better later on and then you can join the ARMY.. good luck with that.
