I can tell you that it is the fear of rejection. When I was that age I was not very confident and asking a girl even a question was nerve racking. As a guy you feel like the girl has all the power. Beacuse if she says yes it is like the highest of the highs. Should she say no it is like the worst feeling. Boys fear that by asking that when the girl says no, you revealed that you liked her. Her friends laugh at you and everyone finds out. It is called being gun shy. I can tell you the best to handle this is by taking control of the situation. Write down a list of 3 guys that you think you like the best that are girlfriend free and start with making a point to give the guy a smile. A smile is like a hint that "Hey she knows I exsisit" Trust me that will please a boy. Make a point to say hi. You see you don't realize is, he is playing it cool but is really nervous. By breaking the ice you let him know that talking to you or approcahing you is not ( entering the occean with sharks circling). In truth when it comes to girls most buys are just scared. I know I was. It was not until I was 15 I actually had a girlfriend. You see if the first guy does not respond. One of the other 2 will. I am certain that you will happen. It sounds like this guy is too nervous. Remember keep your options open. Don't get your mind set he is the only one. Should you want to go with only him? Then have your friend say ( your name) wants to go to the dance. You should ask her. Should he not ask after that? I say think about setting your eyes on findinga new guy. I am sure the first one you try being a bit more up front with will respond. As you get older the boys get more confident and eventually you will be turning down guys nicely all the time. Yeah, girls have the power and that really does not change no matter how old you get. You will find out. Remember

1) Boys are scared
2) You have to give lots of hints
3) Use friends to send messages
4) You are in control
5) Think positive

I think you will be in good shape. Best of luck and I hope a little insight to guys helps you out.

Oh! no its not about ego or reputation.
If he's a first timer then he doesn't know how to initiate. Others usually don't hesitate, still if they hesitate then they are not sure of your reaction. By the way, your perception is, he knows you like him and he likes you. Are you sure you have passed on the message and he got it?
Have you heard of the phrase "I have always considered you my good frnd. Can't we be 'only' frnds?"
Most guys heard it. It's called slaughtering of expectation.
In these situation, some jumps in the well to find the ultimate truth others wait to improve their stand or clarify their doubts.
..I hope I am clear enough.

Haven't you heard that a lady will wait for the man to ask her. It's not lady like to be aggressive. So, if he doesn't know by now that you are attracted to him, you need to drop a hint in a lady-like manner. Try growing up and learn patience! Or, you could select another boy to take you to the ball!

Lets step back and think about your last question... "why are boys scared to make a first move".

Since you're expecting the boy to do it I can only assume you're just as scared to ask - so that should answer your question.

It's not the 50's anymore so why don't you ask him if you want to go so badly?

hey chica,

BCUZ, guys have this thing called an EGO. not always the pompous-*** sort, but a sensitive...bubble...lol they protect this with their LIVES. heaven forbid should their bubble be popped. this is probably where they're most sensitive...guys hate to appear vulnerable and by exposing themselves(i.e. asking u to this ball), they risk appearing vulnerable...so they go scared. there's really no way you can change the ego thing, but you CAN be the girl and UNDERSTAND. sure, he's not getting the picture, but knowing this, you should take a step towards him, show him its safe to ask, and see how it goes! =) tell HIM that you like him and that you'd really like to go to the ball with him...just DO it. =)

best of luck!

Go talk to him and somehow get him to talk about the ball. Once you make him feel comfortable talking to you, he'll most probably ask you out. Don't pressure him though.

Beside, why can't you ask him out? Nobody says that girls can't ask guys out.

Boys are terrified to ask girls out to anything involving relationships, if you want him to go to the dance with you, then you could suggest to him that guys are too nervous and girls usually say yes. The first time I asked out a girl it took me weeks to build up enough confidence... we're still going out.

Do you have any idea how much it COSTS a guy to do something like that? Are you volunteering to pay for it? No? Then quit whining and ask HIM out for a burger.

people always imagine your flirt once you ask for a boy to bypass a date with you... and infrequently boys take earnings in the problem. yet in case you imagine that he also favor you to be his date and he only look ahead to the right time...ask him theres no longer some thing incorrect with that.
