Unfortunately the term kennel cough is used too broadly to describe everything from a cold to distemper.
You need an appointment as soon as possible to determine the exact problem. Your vet may put your new dog on steroids to help it's lungs, antibiotics if he/she thinks it is an infection. They will advise you on the exact treatment needed for your dog. But call them back up and tell them you have an emergency and it might be distemper, they can run a quick test for it. But they should be able to get you in the same day. If not, find a new vet.

This is something you shouldn't wait on, the sooner the better.

Don't waste your money. I brought home a new puppy a week ago from the Humane Society who ended up having kennel cough. I purchased KC Defense, and almost over night, puppy had pnemonia. (Which is a common occurance, and while kennel cough is caused by a virus, it is treated with antibiotics because of the rate at which it can turn into a respiratory infection.)The best course of action if you ask me is to save the money you're about to spend on KC Defense and use it to see the vet and purchase antibiotics. The best line of treatment, and most aggressive, is Doxycycline. After one little pill, and a nap, my puppy was almost as good as new.

If you've adopted a shelter pet, most vets will see your pet for free the first time. (A $45 - $50 savings) The medication is around $20.

I agree with "BigMouth". The best course of action is antibiotics. You don't want to risk kennel cough turning into something like pneumonia. Especially if it's a puppy.

Are you absolutely sure it's kennel cough, or is this a guess? There are other things it could be that mimic kennel cough symptoms, like distemper or valley fever. It's best not to wait too long to see the vet. I would take him to a 24 hour pet care facility before I would risk my puppy's health.

My dog had kennel cough once, what an ordeal. He can test it out by manipulating or rubbing her throat (if I remember correctly) To my knowledge they'll give her an ointment you'll have to use about twice a day for a couple of weeks until its resolved. But the 18th is a long time away, is there another vet that will see you before then?
