A food that is messing around with another food that is not its spouse?

Seriously, though, what it really means is that the food is mixed with something that ruins, contaminates, or makes it less desirable. It can also mean that something is added that should not have been. The word "adulterated" implies that the contaminant is deliberately introduced into the food, usually for the purposes of greed (surreptitiously using lower-cost fillers) or to cause harm (adulterating a water supply with something dangerous, for example).
