It depends on the dog's breed. Several dogs have been specially bred, to fight wolves, and they are very good at it. The Great Pyrenees is one that will always win a fight...but, they don't fight fair

There aren't too many domestic dogs that could go one one one with a wild wolf - especially a healthy male north american or eurasian wolf. In the past different breeds of dog have been used to hunt and kill wolves, but usually the dogs worked in pairs or as a pack, or they were trained to simply trap or corner the wolf until the human hunters could kill it.
A dog wouldn't have much luck against said large healthy wolf. The reasons are varied - wolves always have much larger teeth than domestic dogs of equal or even greater size, and their jaws (with few exceptions) are much more powerful.
An attack trained dog bite force was measured at about 230 pounds per sqare inch (this was on a program called "Bite force' on the National Geographic Channel not long ago), while a wolf's jaws have been estimated having jaw strength anywhere from 500 to 700 psi.
In some ways this would be like pitting a modern city dwelling man against a Neanderthal man in hand to hand combat - a civilized domesticated creature vs a wild, rugged being - a very unfair fight. (granted, modern humans and Neanderthals are not the same species but are very closely related)

Also, dogs are not bred for fighting, but rather flock gaurding (and recently as police and service dogs). Huge fighting dogs such as the Tosa, the Presa Canario, and other related breeds would have the best chance of taking down a wolf in a fight, as well as some of the mastiff breeds used for gaurding.

Depends...

Would it be one on one? Would breed of dog would the wolf be fighting? Is the wolf a higher ranking wolf in the pack hiearchy?

Assuming it is a one on one fight, and the wolf is, say, a high ranking wolf in the pack, and the breed of dog is one meant to fight against wolves---I'd say the dog would win.

Why? Well, as someone mentioned, wolves are pack animals---they rely on their pack for support, especially in fights. While a high-ranking wolf in a pack would be very physically fit and the most capable of winning a fight, chances are it would avoid the possibility of injury and run away.

Also, some breeds of dogs were designed to fight (and win) against wolves. A Great Dane, for example, was bred to fight wild pigs (MUCH more dangerous than a wolf!). Any of the 'pitbull' breeds would likely win against a wolf, given the gameyness that's been bred into them.

As far as pack vs. pack...that's a little more difficult. Dogs can be downright ferocious in a pack setting (feral dogs form packs, after all)...and they're MORE ferocious because there's a lack or clear distinction of a leader to keep everyone in check (like there is in a wolf pack).

My vote would go to the dog, assuming it's of a breed meant to be gamey and fight other animals.

Given: wolves are pack animals with full pack instincts intact.

Conjecture, but gaining more and more credibility, the more the theory is examined: we did not domesticate wolves, but rather the less pack-instinctual specimens, with less fear of humans, came scavenging for our waste, and a tentative friendship began, based on their removing waste for us, and our providing an easier source of food from them. In other words, postulating that dogs more or less domesticated themselves, through the simple fact that these "tamer" specimens had nobody to breed among except themselves. Once a wolf is out of the pack, there is no going back.

Based on this model, a dog, whatever the breed, would have no contest against the wolf, as its whole pack would back it up. They would tear the dog apart.

That being said, no responsible dog-owner has any business letting their dog loose anywhere near the haunts of a wolf-pack!

Will win what? Checkers? Crib? A spelling bee? A fight? That would depend on the breed of dog, type of wolf, age of each, training of dog... does either have a pack close by? A wolf is at a disadvantage against say a trained Irish wolfhound, since killing and/or scaring away wolfs is their job.

Well reese it is on according to what kind of dog, and if the wolf is wild or not. If it were a tame wolf protecting the ones he loves, I would bet on him. But on the other hand if you had a regular dog of good size protecting his loved ones then I'd put my money on him.So you see it is not that cut an dry when it comes down to the brass tacks of it all.

Depending on what? A survival game? More than likely the wolf. Who's smarter? The dog.

Do you not realize that a wolf IS a dog?!?!

But yeah don't think your domesticated house dog would beat a wild animal that kills every day to survive.....

The wolf would outsmart the dog at most any game they engage in.

A wolf would have more experience with dealing with primal stuff and their instinct hasn't been hidden like most dogs have.

"Who's smarter? The dog"

Ok that's just stupid.

Anyway, I assume you mean in a fight. Almost certainly the wolf, but there are some breeds that can put up a good fight. Irish wolfhounds, pittbulls, mastiffs .
