Mites breath through their exoskeleton. You can use mineral oil to clean the ears and it suffocates the mites.

How do you know they are earmites? Has it been properly diagnosed by a vet? Do NOT use any home remedies or self medicate...you need a proepr diagnosis from a vet and receive proper treatment.
Often people think their cats have mites but they don't...in reaitly they have ear infections or other issues. Selfmedicating can lead to more serious problems including deafness.

Get some mineral oil from any store. Then take a dropper and put a few drops in each ear. Then massage their ears to work the mineral oil down the canal. And if you want, use a q-tip if the cat's okay with it. And finally, let it sit in there. Do this 3 times a day for two/three weeks.

I would try to put over the counter earmite medicine in the ears again. However, massage the medicine in when you do it. Also, put a little in your hands and rub it on their tail since cats sleep with their tail near their head and it will keep the ear mites from escaping and coming back later. Also, you should do the treatment probably 2 x daily for seven days (ears and tail).

I was at a super market and there is an effective ear mite solution over the counter for about 6 bucks. I was at Albertson's, but I bet you can find it in your town. Good luck and have a purrfect year.
