There are a few reasons this happens. The most common reason is that the crown has a metal edge that is showing through your gum.

Another reason is that the crown contour is too bulky for your healthy gums. It causes them to become inflammed and then the gum looks darker. Usually it's dark red, though.

Another reason is that you may have accumulated some tartar at the edge (margin) of the crown and it's showign through.

The metal showing through is the usual cause, though. If that's the case, the only real solution is to have a new crown made that would not show metal. This can be done using exactly the same materials used in this crown, but with a "butt porcelain margin," that sits on a 90 degree "shoulder finish line" preparation. This can be done with an all-porcelain crown, such as a Procera, Lava or Empress crown. Your dentist would know what these are. He'she might not use these specific brands, but there are several crowns out there that are similar to these products.

It's not a great solution, but it is actually possible to cut away the metal edge of a crown and then fill in the void with a tooth-colored filling material. This might be suitable to tide you over if finances do not permit getting a new crown right now.

Your gum color is from the metal in the crown. Most crowns are considered PFM's which stand for "Porcelain fused to metal"
the inner part of the crown is metal with porcelain baked over the top, the rim of the crown "margin" goes up into the gumline when cemented which can dis-color the normal pink appearance of your gum tissue. Ask your dentist about replacing with ceramic crowns if possible, can be quite expensive!

Skin pigmentation plays an important role in determining the colour of your gums. For instance, darker skinned people naturally have darker gums which is perfectly normal. Further, smokers may also notice their gums to be unusually dark and are at a higher risk to contract gum disease than others. Other reasons that can make your gums look black and grey in colour are acute necrotizing periodontal disease and acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis respectively.
