The techniques contained IN the katas can be effective IF the person ahs been trained in how to use them. I ahve seen instructors that teach kata, but don't tech the actual usage of the techniques. Kata is a way of organizing the techniques to make them easier to remember and as a way of increasing speed, stamina and refxex speed as well as improving balance and developing the sense of flow and movement from one technique to another. However, unless the techniques contained within the kata are explained, demonstrated and practiced, they are of no use at all in a confrontation. When I teach, I make certain that EVERY movement is understood and developed to combat practicality.

Only if the one you are fighting plays along and knows what kata you are doing. Kata is to teach you form and technique, build muscle memory and help you form combinations. The longer you study, the more natural the moves become, then it is second nature to block a bunch and break a nose.
