I am a 37 year old Dad, and want to bust a move that will make my kids think I took lessons from someone who is not white. Is it possible without drinking a six pack and also getting my kids wasted?

I should admit. . I have never drank in my life ever and never will. . . I don't mean to offend anyone. Since I don't drink, I also don't drink in front of my kids. . .

Oh you are a hoot! Yes, some white people can dance. Find a place that teaches hip hop. Do you at least have some rhythm?

Well, sometimes there is a bit of truth to stereo types. However, that doesn't mean you have to buy into them.

White people can't dance. Black people like rap music and r&b

Is there a connection? Well, both seem to be true generally but NOT absolutely. Perhaps listening to rap and r&b gives one a better sense of rhythm over time and thus helps make one a better dancer.

Correlation does NOT equal causality. Any scientist can tell you that.

Perhaps society has conditioned everyone to think white people can't dance and black people can. If that's true, maybe its all in your head and the stereotype being constantly re-enforced actually makes the stereotype true after a while. So what - is your primary way of identifying yourself as a person to think about your race? Are you primarily white before you are an individual? If so, you will find a way to fit the stereotypes of whatever you are black, white, asian, whatever.

Are you going to make sure you are a bad dancer because being good means you are somehow less white? Come on - listen to that for a second. Same goes for any stereotype. Is an asian who sucks at math going to literally drive themselves to a heart attach trying to be good at math because they are less asian if they don't? Are they going to go around actively looking for car accidents out of a drive to make the stereotype true? If you are a black person, do you feel some obligation to get shinny rims for your car because you are less black if you don't? Doesn't it sound rediculous? Is Cowboy Troy less 'black' because he wears a cowboy hat and is a country musician? I doubt is fans would say so.

Using Cowboy Troy as an example (by the way, I am not a fan of country, but Garth Brooks, Cowboy Troy and Johnny Cash kick ***), does being black define Cowboy Troy or does Cowboy Troy expand the common definition of being black? I think the latter. For that matter, what exactly does "being black" or "being white" or "being hispanic" mean? I ask because apparently because I'm white, I have some sort of obligation to fit some sort of mold - I suppose I'm supposed to go out and fit that mold wether I actually like what that mold entails or not.... right? Yeah, ok boss. Big OK sign for you, where the hell did my Budweiser and wife beater tee shirt go? lol

If you are conditioned to think you can't dance, no matter how good you are, you will think that whatever you do is bad dancing - after all - white people can't dance so whatever I'm doing, since I'm white must be bad dancing.

Kind of putting the horse before the cart so to speak isn't it? Then again, that's what stereotypes do. Often they are based on the smallest shred of reality, but over time get blown out of proportion, start feeding on themselves and end up actually changing behavior such that the original stereotype is justified.

I believe this, but on the other hand, I have to admit when I hear white people this/black people that kinds of humor, I do laugh. If the joke is funny, I don't really care if its racist or sexist or whatever, I'm still going to laugh while I'm saying out loud "man, that's horrible." For instance, Dave Chapell, Carlos Mencina - they are both equal opportunity offenders - they pick on everyone and let me tell you, I think all of it is hilarious because at the end of the day, what are they really joking about? Its not white people, its not black people, its not asians or hispanics. They are making fun of the stereotyping itself. That is something I find hysterical.

I say to hell with what over people think. Just get out there and dance.

(John Travolta is in Saturday Night Fever)

So you're saying that white peeps CAN'T dance ??? :s Take hip hop lessons ! I do. It's very fun. I'm still learning. Watch DVD movies... like Step Up :) Watch DVDs that teach you how to dance...you can get any type of dance lessons but I'd suggest hip hop ...cuz you prob wanna dance freestyle right ? W/ ballroom there are certain steps that you have to do. Lots of dance styles have "rules". Tonight my sis found a vid of Rihanna's choreograher & he was breaking the steps down as to how she dances in one of her vids. Anywayz, it doesn't matter what race you are. I'm not white & I know I'm a better dancer than a lotta peeps, even tho I'm just learning hip hop. When you see peeps dancing they're all doing the same thing... Sign up for dance lessons :D Some places even offer dance lessons for free. (I take ballroom lessons for free @ a Friendship Center)

I'm shy & I don't drink either. I'll have a few sips or have a cooler once in a blue moon. I think you're lacking confidence... Do you worry bout what peeps are gonna think ? Forget them. I went to a social on New Year's Eve & even when they turned the lights on & when there prob weren't other peeps dancing I still kept on dancing. I didn't care what they thought of me. I know that they prob thought that I was drunk but I wasn't cuz I don't drink. I think my Mom is embarassed of me :( Tonight I was dancing in this room (there are windows that you can look in to) & the staff would look in & see me dancing. My Mom also said "Where did you find that ? :s" to my sis. I asked, "Is that a bad thing?" She didn't answer me... She also said, "Sit down, relax." :( & when she found out that I was dancing even tho other peeps weren't dancing, (there were peeps on the dance floor still) & I said "I don't care what they think" My Mom said "What about your fam?" I still don't care !!! She must be ashamed of me !!! :( :@ !!!! Oh yeah, also, who said that you have to get drunk to be a "good dancer" ? If you don't drink you'd be a better dancer. Do it cuz you WANNA dance. Don't turn to alcohol to loosen up. Maybe you need to find out what'd make you comfortable dancing in front of peeps... & YES you can dance w/o getting WASTED. You just might not be much of a dancer, that's all. Otherwise you might end up just making a bigger fool of yourself...(while drunk) If you don't drink, I don't see the need for you to drink just to make a pt... Practice in the comfort of your own home... Find out what'd get you in the mood... For me, I gotta like the song to really feel like dancing. Hope this helped !!!

That's funny! Take some lessons. Dancing takes coordination :-)) I have danced with one too many drinks in me, and it makes me dizzy and fall.
