I don't buy the "Religion is the root of all evil" line of thought.
It just seems too likely that people can be Evil, whether they believe in God, Allah, Tao, or Shiva.
If anything arrogance is the negative force, and there is just as much of that in Atheist circles as in churches.

It's hard to know where to start. Historically, we have the Inquisition, the Thirty Years War, the Salem witch trials, and much else. Nowadays, there is the Palestinian issue, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, the Balkans, Kashmir ... The Catholic Church alone slaughtered an estimated 250,000 innocent people -- the biggest genocide in history, until the twentieth century.

Billions of brilliant individuals have been killed, maimed and imprisoned all in the name of religion. Look at The Salem Witch Trials, The Spanish Inquisition, September 11th, The Crusades, The war between Palestine and Israel. All in the name of religion. Scientific achievements like proving the earth revolves around the Sun and is round were held down in favor of the church's view to the contrary and put to death Nicolus Copernicus and Girodanni Bruno. They also imprisoned Galileo Galilee for the same thing.
Even today scientific advancements like Stem Cell research are held back all because of a few imbiciles who still want to live based on Bronze Age fairy tales written by a bunch of blood thirsty psychopaths. These people are like every panda that won't **** to save it's own species.
I look out my window at the roadkill in the street and look at the two inch maggots engorging themselves. I think we deserve even less rights than them. Why? Because unlike us they don't waste their lives on superstition and pseudoscience like creationism to back it up. We cease to evolve and drag our feet, all for a little comfort just like so many pigs rolling in their own filth.
The fundamentalists shove their corrupt retrosocial theories down the throats of the mindless masses who will believe everything they're told, so they don't have to think for themselves and the cycle keeps going in perpetuity.

There are a multitude of ways in which religion has had a negative impact on our society. I believe that we would be better of if people hadn't had the need to believe in a non existent god

Religion is a manmade belief system that is based upon one's comfort level and imagination on what they want God to be or what they think God is. It is seeped in superstition and a system of judgement fueled by fear and a carnal minded interpretation of what is in the Bible.

I didn't see the mistake till I read your correction. Anyway, I think religion has given woman low self esteem, and taught men to be arrogant.

We've lost billions of dollars to religion, and it could've gone to cancer research and treatment.
It also could have gone to energy production, agriculture, and technological advances.
