Your camera should give you excellent results. White-out from flash in a close picture is a common problem with many (all?) digital point and shoot cameras.

Your camera does provide an exposure compensation function where you can increases or decrease the exposure in 1/3 EV increments. If you don't know what this is or how to do it, check your owner's manual. I think you have to do this from the P/M Menu. Turn the mode dial to P/M and then press the Menu button on the camera back. Look for "Exposure Compensation" and take it from there. You want to move in the negative direction. Try -0.3, then -0.7 and then -1.0 EV and you will probably find a setting that works. If you have to go all the way to -2.0 EV, then so be it. It's digital, so experimentation is free.

You can also take a "close" picture by backing up and zooming the lens out a bit. This will keep the light from the flash from being so harsh and you may not have to fool with exposure compensation.

Yea be at least 2 to 3 ft away from the subject your going to take a picture of, maybe even 5 with the flash on. Also maybe your not letting the camera focus. Push the button down to take the picture half away down till a green light or a chim goes off, then when that happens push all the way down to take the picture. Dont push all the way down right away, let the camera focus for about half a second, then push all the way down when it is focused. Thats why I never liked Kodaks... Ive always had problems with them. If you do want a new camera I would recommond spending $250 for the Canon A630 or 640. They take excellent pictures and is very simple to use. I own the A630 and you can never go wrong. If you want to get a little bit fancy they have manuel settings too.

Good answers. Vintage suggested a window for nice light, and I totally agree. Use a rather bright window, but without sunlight streaming through, Turn off the flash and just shoot shoot shoot. The light will be much softer and the images will be more 3-D. If you have a helper, they can hold a piece of white cardboard on the shadow side to reflect some light into the shadows.

This technique will make your shutter speed slower than with the flash, so you will have to keep the camera steady, either with a tripod or by good careful shooting habits.

Have fun taking baby pictures!

Up untill now you've had 4 very good answers; one being excellent. my 2 cents worth is just because you take flash off that photo should not be blurry. Hold that camera steady untill you know the shot is taken; and possibly put baby at a window for some light.

You are probably shooting the pictures too close for the flash range. Back off a little, and zoom in with the lens, if your camera can do that. Your baby will really appreciate not having the flash so close to his face, too!

There are other ways of making the pictures darker, but please try this one first for your son's eyes sake.

Use the thing what we photographers call a Soft box that should make the baby's face appear like soft angle's face. you put that on the flash... you can make it using a white plastic bag put it over the flash and your flash shouldn't be that harsh on the face
