Great question!! There are online volunteer organizations now, and you can join them. Most of us, who run non profit organizations, have found that people sometimes have the "will" but not the "posibility" to help for various reasons.
You can try visiting VOLUNTEER MATCH and search for online volunteer opportunities. Believe me. It can be as challenging as volunteering in person. I rely some times on online volunteers to help out with some of our cases worldwide. The link to volunteer match is below.
