I think part of the problem may be in the very nature of the pure bred dog. For example, two pit bulls escaped from a neighbor's yard and killed a woman's dog while she was walking it, on leash, down the street. Many dogs run wild or escape their yard, few breeds have such a packing instinct to kill. (I don't live in an area where these dogs are raised for fighting and the two that killed were certainly not.) The only other breed of dog I've heard about that happening with around where I live is a German Shepherd. A man told me that his son was walking the dog (the German Shepherd) and their dog went after another dog (also on leash) and killed it. The son couldn't control the shepherd and no one expected this to happen. That breed can also be somewhat unpredictable sometimes.
My dog's favorite dog to play with is a pit bull mix - the sweetest dog on the planet. I know the dog, however. I also know if she so chose, that dog could kill my dog. Fortunately, my dog has the clear alpha status.
I shy away from letting my dog play with pit bulls unless the owner is attentive, involved and watching. My dog was only attacked once by another dog to a degree that lead to an emergency vet visit - and that dog just happened to be a pit bull. AND the owner was present, attentive and responsible. Just a coincidence? My dog was attacked badly only one other time, but we were able to intervene and neither dog was hurt. Again, the attacking dog just "happened" to be a pit bull. Coincidence? (That time the owner was present but very inattentive and irresponsible.)
I think it's possible to both adore a pit bull and acknowledge that the breed has a reputation and people have concerns about the breed based on reasonable experiences. I personally would hate to see pit bulls (or pit bull mixes) "banned" or "destroyed," but I'd like to see more screening for their owners. Not everyone deserves the priviledge of owning a pit bull. Not everyone is capable of dealing with some of the unique demands of the breed.

i have a pit bull and she is a sweetie. she has never showed any sign of aggression and is actulally scared of everything. even the sound of a cell phone ringing will make her run and hide. This dog has no hope of being aggressive, and the pit bull across the street just died, and he was the nicest dog ever. And i cant stand how people just assume that every pit bull is aggressive. Yes they were bred for fighting and protecting, but even pure bred pitbulls are sweet if raised with love. I have seen some very aggressive pits but thats because owners or past owners trained them to be that way, or abused them.

Pitbulls are not the only dog breed that attacks humans or other pets. I know of a Dalmation that was named Judge because on the ride home from the pound it jumped out the window of a car and attacked and killed a german shepherd.
I know of a girl who was mauled by a husky, and I have heard of plenty of Rottweiler attacks and deaths. I was bitten by a mutt when I was younger delivering newspapers. All dogs have the potential to be aggressive and feared, my grandma owned a chihuahua that was named Rambo for a reason.
German Shepherds, dobermans and any dog that is put in the wrong situation has been known to attack. Many other breeds of dog attack people and other pets. End of Story ...
People need to be careful what type of energy they have and feed to dogs because they are very in tune to it.
Some people should not own dogs, for many reasons... Usually though those people are incapable of understanding why that is. Just as some people should not have children, or freedom. Dogs do not plan attacks on other animals or humans, dogs react. Just as the hate mongerers are doing by posting breed specific crap they are reacting and in doing so, are no different from the dogs they are attacking
Regards

Okay first off I am here to agree with Brandi and rtepkavon. These dogs were bred for one thing and one thing only and that is to fight . They are not great family pets . How would you feel if that sweet baby just turned all of a sudden and ripped the face off of your 4 yr old child . Would it still be your baby ? I think not . That is what pit bull owners always say when their dog turns "I cant believe my dog did this he or she never did this before"!!! How many more people have to get killed or mauled before we instate a bread legislation so that these dogs at least get sterilized and the breed dies out ? I am sorry to offend anyone but the truth is the truth and sometimes it hurts . I for one am sick of people singing the praises of pit bulls!!! Yes I know alot of other dogs bite but at least I know the difference betewn a bite on the arm and the arm being ripped off my body . I would much prefer the bite on the arm. Give me a break with the comparisons betewn a pit bull and an ankle biter. You can pull the ankle biter off you cant the pit bull.Nope as for me and my house we will never own a pit bull . EVER !!!! well I have to speak my mind on this issue.

I own a 5 year old male pit bull, and I love him to death. They are getting the bad raps because of how the media portrays them. This includes articles, movies, etc. The only dog I have been bitten by was a Dachshund. In my area there are alot of so called gang bangers that have pits as a statis symbol. They make me so angry when I see them walking their pits with hugh chains around their necks...for what? My pit walks on a leash just like any other dog. This makes for a bad image. I can only say that I hope someday people will realize the pits true value.

I personally don't have a problem with Pit Bull Terriers. I think the news and the media has a role in how people judge these dogs. I heard 6 months ago, a Pit Bull killed three people. I'm guessing thats why people are against them, its what they see on TV.

I think that a lot of the reputation of Pits come from the media. My local station recently aired a story where they said that a Pit severely attacked a little girl, but in reality it was a purebred AKC Boxer (not commonly considered a vicious breed, and it looked nothing like a pit). Also, it seems like it is only news if a Pit is involved. I think that they are great dogs, and I have only met one that was aggressive. But, he was severely abused and a trained fighting dog.

It is NOT the pit bull that suddenly turns and attacks family memebers, it is the ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL. That is EXACTLY the type of misinformed attitude that the question is about. You hear about any bad dog behavior and ASSUME the dog in question was a pit bull because you have heard that pit bulls are bad. There are at least a dozen full-blooded pit bull dogs and at least twice that many mixes that are patients where I work, and NOT ONE OF THESE DOGS HAS A MEAN BONE IN ITS BODY. I will sit on the floor next to a pit bull without hesitation. Dachshunds, Yorkies, Chow Chows, Jack Russells (because we see a lot of poorly socialized JRT's that live on farms here) are ALL far more likely to bite in my experience.

I've been bitten by Daschunds, Cocker Spaniels, Shih Tzus, Poodles and Bichon Frises. But NEVER by a Pit Bull. Some of my favourite patients are pitties, and I personally DESPISE that legislation against them here in Ontario. Breed-based legislation is nothing more than racism directed against dogs. It's silly.

OK.. they may be the sweetest dogs... But why do they suddently turn on their owners, or the neighbors. Why do they suddently lash out at a child and kill the child? Why do they chase a women who is out walking all the way home and even into her own home when she was minding her own business, and the dogs just attacked.
WHY is it that pits are the only breeds that you hear of that fatally attack humans?
OH! Read the link below. Their pits where great family dogs and swear they wouldn't ever hurt a soul!
