The most obvious location is controlling the temperature of the melt (especially in smaller scale operations) where a self contained controller a few inches on a side takes input from a thermocouple, converts to a temperature allowing for variations in the conversion curve, and intelligently controls the heat application "learning" how the furnace reacts to avoid overshooting the set point temperature. A number of microprocessor based controllers are on the market under $200 which will ramp the temperature up or down and adapt constantly to the heating conditions in the furnace.
