Cockers get chronic ear infections especially during the hot months so you need to clip & tweeze the hairs out of their ears underside and life the ear for air to move through while they are sleeping. They are also prone to epilepsy.
Loyal dog and has an even temperment. They do shed a LOT.

Cockers can be lovely family pets. I've known several that were sweet, loving dogs and very well behaved. On the other hand, they have their issues, too. They can be somewhat aggressive and tend to snap frequently. They are somtimes stubborn, which makes handling them a chore; ie. for nail trims, haircuts, etc. Also, the shape of their ears is about the worst one in the dog family. They have very long, floppy, beautiful ears that almost totally block their ear canals. I've seen THE WORST ear infections in Cocker Spaniels, and they are widely known to have recurrent ear problems, sometimes ending in radical surgery to open the ear canals. I'd say research the breeder you're looking at very carefully. If they won't provide you with a detailed regime of ear care and behavior training tips, maybe you should look elsewhere. Good luck!

Had a cocker for years - male - English. He was easy as a pup.
As he got older, had a bad experience with a groomer. After that he got snappy if anyone went near his ears.
He also did not like bathing which I hear is different for a cocker.
General however freindly and a good house dog. Pain to keep the fur unknoted. He was also Very posessive of his stuff to the point he would growl at you if you tried to take his toys.

I've had both long hair cockers, and short hair cockers.By far the short hair cocker is the best between the two. but you still have to keep an eye on those ears. short hair cockers don't for some reason have tthe snapping attitude of the long hair. their temperment is a whole lot better too. when it came to children you just could not ask for a better companion. But of course I always let my females have one litter before I would fix them. That way their motherly instincks would kick in. I've never had a short hair to snap, or for that fact even jump on a child. But a long hair for some reason are just wired different.

Cockers have been bred for their looks and not their temperaments. When they're nice they are wonderful dogs, but they can be kind of unpleasant, and can go from sweet to unpleasant in a second. Want a good dog? Go to the shelter and get a mutt, they're the best.

Firstly, please do not buy from a petstore or classified ad. Most of these places are puppymills. Puppymill bred dogs are more prone to health issues and temperament problems as these places do not do pre-breeding tests. If you must buy a dog, choose a GOOD breeder. I strongly encourage you to check out rescue. Just Google cocker spaniel+ rescue+ your location. Also check your local animal shelter/SPCA.
Here are some helpful websites:
http://www.petfinder.com
http://www.akc.org
http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_adoption_information/how_to_find_a_good_dog_breeder/
Pros:
*They will bond closely with you.
*They are people pleasers.
*They are intelligent and easy to train.
*They are loyal and want to be with you all the time.
*They love walks and playing with toys.
*They maintain their puppy like appearance.
*They're good watch dogs, barking out the alert, but they are not yappy.
*They love water.
Cons:
*They can be snappy if not properly socialized-- especially with children. Obedience classes can help immensely.
*Professional grooming can get expensive. Keeping them hunt cut/puppy cut is best if you do not have a lot of time and money to devote to grooming.
*Their coats are prone to matting, so regular brushing and bathing is a must.
*Sensitive skin is an issue so they need to eat premium dog food with salmon or other fish oil.
*They chew.
*They follow their nose, even if it leads them to mischief.
*They are prone to chronic ear infections because their ears are so heavy and do not get good air circulation.

I grew up with a cocker, and as much as I loved old Pete, I still have a scar between my eyes where he bit me when I was 5! Cockers are good, very loyal dogs, but in general, they're better with adults. They CAN be snappy with young kids.
This doesn't mean they're all that way, but they are a little impatient by nature. We took one in when my son was young, and it jumped him too. He scared the dog unwittingly, but they are quick to react....not necessarily great with kids, but they're still wonderful dogs.

well to the best of my knowledge this type of breed is high strung and easily stressed so if you have kids i would think more on a retriever. most small breeds are not good with kids because kids want to play and get too physical.
