We try to neuter dogs before they become sexually mature. That typically does not happen any earlier than 6 months of age. If a dog matures before being neutered, he may begin undesirable "male" behaviors like roaming, marking territory, and of course, mating. Some breeders require pups to be neutered before going to their homes, so they are done at about 2 months of age. This can be tricky, because sometimes the testicles don't descend until around 4 months, so the procedure can be difficult. Also, a 2-month old puppy is a HUGE anesthetic risk... they're just newborns at that stage. So, most vets would prefer to wait until they are a bit bigger and more able to handle a surgery. Hope that helps!

Dogs dont have to be neutered at 6 months many vets in USA do it as young as six weeks, although the practice is not common in UK, The dogs hormone levels alter at about 6 months and they become the equivalent of the teen rebel and like to start to experiment , like kids I suppose, So vets tend to think this is the best age to perform a spay or neutering. I do hope this helps, if not we have more info specifically on this area in our site

Neutering can be performed at any age over age 8 weeks. Dogs neutered before puberty (generally age 6 months) tend to grow a bit bigger than dogs neutered after puberty (testosterone is involved in the causing bones to stop growing so without testosterone the bones stop growing later).

Neutering can also be performed in the geriatric patient should the prostate gland become enlarged and the best medical decision be to shrink it. In this event, preanesthetic bloodwork and other diagnostics relevant to anesthetizing an older patient would be recommended.

The traditional age for neutering is around 6 months of age and many veterinarians still recommend neutering at this age.

The pound and the SPCA neuter strays and abandoned dogs, also those from confiscated puppy farms, and they can be any age, prior to putting them up for adoption..

This is not true. It is recomended at 6 months. some vets will do 8 weeks which I protest. I had my dog spayed at 7 years. I have another at 3 years and vet said I could do it when I was ready. If you plan to spay or neuter. 6 months is the best they are old enough to take the surgery and they will not be in heat. or shouldn't be in heat.

Pediatric surgery (surgery done less than 6 months of age) is really risky and should be avoided. The bigger the pet is the better they will do under anesthesia. Places like shelters can do surgery on younger animals because the animals are not owned by anyone, so the consequences of a death during surgery is minimal.

Castration at an early age will cause the dog to become overly tall, as the growth plates in the long bones will not close at the appropriate time; additionally, the dog will lack breadth of chest. The combination of these two factors sets the stage for your dog to have painful orthopedic problems. The OFA has published articles on this subject. An early age means below 1 year in small and medium sized dogs, and below 2 to 2.5 years in large and giant breeds.

Thats abnormal, at the same time as a cat is neutered, the testicles are bumped off, it is the source of sex hormones. for this reason making the cat not favor to have sex. Animals do not have sex for sport as human beings do. they purely do it to procriate. there is yet another proceedure that's a vasectomy. at the same time as a vasectomy renders a male cat sterile, it does not impact testosterone levels so long because the spermatic artery is saved intact. A vasectomized cat, in different words, can mate, yet won't be able to father kittens. This technique is not in any respect used for relatives male cats, because a vasectomized male cat might want to nonetheless have territorial topics, nonetheless perchance be weak to scuffling with different cats to guard that territory, nonetheless wander and attempt to get outdoors in search for of a mate, and nonetheless spray urine that has a very good smell. Vasectomy continues to be a valid decision for inhabitants administration in feral cat colonies, however. Chris

It doesn't necassarily have to be 6 months. At our hospital we neuter as early as 4 months. There are some vets who do pediatric neuters when a puppy is only 8 weeks old.

They can be neutered when they are 2 months, but it is safer to wait until they are 6 months. Also, sometimes the testicles do not drop until later and when they are older the testicles are bigger which makes them a little easier to remove.
