I would like to find someone who can help me get a grant to restore an old building and turn it into a youth group. The area is in a poverty zone and there is no where for the youth in the community to go. Not a bowling alley, a theater, zero, nothing. This town has plenty of children and just one grocery store, one gas station, a hardware store, and pharmacy. And that's it. There is an old abandoned building (what use to be a bar) which we could have. But it needs to be updated with electric, a roof, furnace etc. The building has great potential and could be restored into a youth group. But since we don't have the money to do this where do I go, who do I talk to, who can I contact, how do I write it up. I've never done this before so I don't know where to start so I could use all the help I can get. Please help!

You sound like a good person who genuinely cares about your community; that is completely refreshing! Grant writing is complicated unless you are experienced. I don't know if you've already done this, but you may want to start with your Town board of if you live in a village, attend a village meeting and begin to network with others to gather more information about your cause. I am not saying you can't do this on your own, but it will be a lot more time consuming to do it on your own and you may need the help of experienced people who have written grants or are cognizant of how to go about doing it. You may also want to try going to your local school board to see about getting some kind of grant to get an after-school program going in that building. Good luck!

Your local United Way agency is in the process of having their campaign up and the deadline in Early March. Contact your local United Way
Also, most State Governors have a web site and you can get on their mailing list for weekly grants in your state that are available
That's has been most profitable for me.
Grants.gov is another place to start
Also contact Youth Service Assoc. Web site below
Meadows Foundation - below Well I could go on forever, I had to do allot of research to obtain $$$ for my parenting & Anger Management programs and there is money out there. You just gotta do the leg work, LOL. Hope this helps you. GOOD LUCK!

Your best bet is to seek for private grants or grants from private foundations.

The best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org . They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it's a subscription based website ($19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription.

If you want to try federal sources, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants.

CFDA has several ways to search for grants. I suggest you search by beneficiary and select Private Non Profit Organization and you can find listings of grants available http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

If you do a search for Youth Grants for whatever state you're in, you ought to be able to find something. This is what I found without putting in any state preference:

Here's a website with information on grants available for youth and children:
http://www.lib.msu.edu/harris23/grants/2child.htm

Another site has these grants:
The Clay Aiken Able-to-Serve Grants (US applicants only)
The Bubel/Aiken Foundation and Youth Service America (YSA) are pleased to announce grants of up to $1,000 to support youth-led service projects in which youth with and without disabilities serve their communities together

These grants support youth (ages 5-25), teachers, youth-leaders, youth-serving organizations, or organizations that serve people with disabilities in implementing service projects for National and Global Youth Service Day, April 20-22, 2007. Projects can address themes such as the environment, disaster relief, public health and awareness, community education, hunger, and literacy, and any issues youth identify as a community need.

The Capital One Youth Service Fund (US applicants only)
Capital One and Youth Service America (YSA) are pleased to announce grants of up to $500 to support service youth-led projects in low/moderate income communities. Applicants must be located in the metro DC area: Washington DC, Fairfax, Arlington, Prince George’s, and Montgomery Counties, and the city of Alexandria

These grants support youth (ages 5-25), teachers, youth-leaders, youth-serving organizations, or organizations that engage youth in low/moderate-income communities in implementing service projects for National & Global Youth Service Day, April 20-22, 2007. Projects can address themes such as the environment, disaster relief, public health and awareness, community education, hunger, and literacy, and any issues that youth identify as a community need.

To learn more, download BOTH documents below. Both documents are required for a complete application. Questions? Email CapitalOne@ysa.org.
Receipt deadline: January 26, 2007.

Perhaps if you contact youth organizations in your area, such as Boys and Girls Club, they may be able to assist you as well.
